Storytelling closes age gaps

A 94-year age gap didn't seem to get in the way of storytime at Radius Matua retirement home.

Matua Primary took 20 seven-year-old students to the retirement home to listen to Disney tales together earlier today.

Sarah-Jane Fowler, 7, had morning tea with her great-grandmother Joan, 96, at Radius Matua this morning as part of the storytelling event.

Radius Matua activities coordinator Sandra Lette says she was pleased with the way the two generations were sharing.

'I had hoped for [this reaction], because every time I bring children into the facility I see this kind of connection.”

Storyteller Nick Duval Smith showed up in colourful attire and shared retold versions of Disney stories as the students sat cross-legged and straight-backed and the residents sipped tea.

'We use storytelling a lot in our activity programme” as it can help with dementia patients, says Sandra.

Facility manager Craig Shipton says schools come to see the residents often, as well as four-legged visitors 'to interact with”, he says.

'We try to keep involved as much as we can [with the community].”

The storytelling time was organised by Countdown as a launch for their new in-store collectable.

In conjunction with Disney, Countdown's new collectable – Disney Movie Stars – have 42 individual collectible stickers and cards which feature various Disney cartoon characters.

'Storytelling encourages imagination, creativity, and togetherness,” says Countdown general manager marketing Bridget Lamont.
