Teddy bears' day in the sun

'For ev'ry bear that ever there was. Will gather at Bethlehem College, because Today's the day the, Teddy Bears have their picnic.”

That's how the song goes - albeit with a little literary licence. The sentiment remains the same because it is the Teddy Bears' Picnic and it is at Bethlehem College sportsground. But not today, rather next Saturday, February 20 at 10am.

Children and their teddy bears are invited to a special picnic this weekend.

'Every Teddy Bear who's been good is sure of a treat today.

There's lots of marvellous things to eat. And wonderful games to play.”

The 100-year-old children's ditty could have been custom written for the Variety – the Children's Charity event.

'The idea is for families to bring Teddys, a blanket and a picnic and have some fun without spending cash hand over fist. And of course, raise some money,” says organiser Morris Danks.

'And if you go down to Bethlehem College today, you're sure of a big surprise.”

The surprise being a whole host of children's entertainment including The Doo Dahs, who are our homegrown Wiggles, Kath Bee the children's singer and songwriter, kidioki or karaoke for kids, Georgia a local singer and plenty of dance groups.

And rides and activities will be provided on the day for a gold coin donation. Vehicles from the Variety bash charity will also be there. And bring a towel – there will be water fights. And street food.

The Variety Bash team behind the picnic is committed to raising $10,000 before next month. Then throughout the year Variety distributes grants to physically and financially challenged kids.

'We noticed a lot of kids in Tauranga who are struggling, a lot of kids who need help. And you can help by enjoying the Teddy Bears Picnic and contributing,” says Morris.

'Then at 3pm their Mommies and Daddies, will take them home to bed. Because they're tired little Teddy Bears.”
