Locals have a bone to pick

It was disgusting, it was selfish, it was inconsiderate – and it was starting to whiff.

Someone had gone down to the water's edge at Rotary Park and dumped a sack full of fish skeletons just above the high-tide mark.

The remains of the day: Fish carcases are getting up local's nose.

'No they hadn't been washed up,” says a proud but disappointed Maungatapu resident Brian Campbell. The beach, his beach, looked like the gutting room at a fish factory.

'Somebody had gone down there under cover of darkness when no-one was around and hoped they were safe.”

Brian is certain the culprits just emptied the sack of carcasses off the seawall last Monday night 'in the hope the mess would just go away, the seagulls would get it and they wouldn't get caught”.

He and other locals walking their dogs the next morning were livid.

'Rotary Park is a beautiful park, a beautiful part of the city. We are proud of it and care about it. We do not want it abused and disrespected,” says Brian. But it's not just illegal dumping that's getting up local noses.

Brian takes Hugo, his labradoodle, down to the park for a walk most mornings as do many other local dog owners. 'We are all conscious of our responsibilities. We always take our little plastics bags and clean up.” And he appeals to the better sense of others to follow the example.

'If you sat up in the trees with binoculars or got a still camera down there you would be surprised at the number of owners who take their dogs there to do their business. Especially in the evening.”

There are many unaccompanied dogs on the loose in the park using it as a toilet.

'It gives responsible dog owners a bad name.”

He appeals to people to clean up and care for a beautiful local facility.

The dumping of the fish skeleton is probably in breach of the Tauranga City Council's street use and public places bylaw.

It's illegal to drop or deposit any material or anything in a public place and especially anything that could be hazardous, injurious or likely to create a nuisance.

The bylaw's aimed at ensuring public health and safety is maintained. Brian and friends would no doubt argue the fish skeletons constituted a nuisance, and therefore a breach.

Disgusting

The person responsible is disgusting and lazy. But hey dogs are carnevours just like us humans so how would it be if we wandered around like the many dogs you describe, and freely urinate where we liked, and defficated but then picked it up ? Behaviour like this would not be tolerated. I say ban dogs from parks and picnic areas and create dog only areas where you and your dog can wander amongst the invisible filth to your hearts content.Just make sure you don't sit down anywhere for a picnic.

Rotary Park! I am reliably informed that those going to this park can expect to have their photograph taken by locals and the neighbourhood patrols (Without their knowledge or consent) because it has a reputation for being a "meeting place"? So maybe it's no wonder this sort of activity takes place when the sticky beaks are tucked up at home with their cocoa. I guess the only REAL issue was that it was above the high tide mark.

Many humans did exactly that last weekend in the streets of the CBD, should they be treated like dogs then???.

Standing in dog crap is not funny especially at the beach wearing jandals or bare feet. Even worse for kids. Our walkways at Papamoa always have dog turd as a trap for kids and us older people as well. Stuff the lazy arse dog owners and their ridiculous toy dogs.

You certainly have some sense of imagination as to the connection to someone dumping fish remains and the pervert activity at the toilets, thats the reason people were being observed.Your insinuation as to sticky beaks is so far off the mark, perhaps you wouldn,t mind your kids being around when this sort of activity goes on around them but I certainly do.PS this article had nothing to do with this subject only you brought it up!!!

Yes. The humans who urinate in the CBD and smash bottles and throw up, etc,..should be treated like dogs. Same as dog owners who let their dogs poo everywhere and leave it for others to walk in. They're worse than the animals they are responsible for because they should know better - but unfortunately they don't because they are stupid and ignorant.

Where in my comment did I mention what has purportedly been going on in this park? I have visited this park many times with my children in the past and I was more concerned about the potential "Perverts" (YOUR word) with their cameras clicking merrily away at myself, my kids, my dog and my car. Hence, I have not been there for many years. I was suggesting that "normal" people are visiting after hours, due to the "Park keepers" such as yourself and the comment from Brian Campbell about watchers in the trees (probably not too far off the mark in this park). Encourage "normal" activity and the strange people go somewhere quieter... Hopefully
