The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to the Whakarewarewa Forest about 6pm on Friday after emergency services were notified of a serious accident in a remote part of the mountain bike trails.

Rescue helicopter chief pilot Barry Vincent says the location of the group was difficult to find due to limited information and communication with the people involved.

'But once located, a St John Intensive Care Paramedic was winched into the site to assist another St John medic who had made it in on foot.”

Once stabilised, the woman and St John paramedics were winched out of the site.

Following St John spinal injury protocols, the 29-year-old Rotorua woman was airlifted in a serious condition directly to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital. The flight crew used Night Vision Goggles to accomplish the flight.
