Sol3 Mio perform in March

Fans of Sol3 Mio can expect to see everything that makes operatic trio so well-loved by audiences when they come to town in March.

Due to overwhelming ticket demand, Sol3 Mio have added a second show and will take to the stage at ASB Baypark Arena in Mount Maunganui on March 8 and 9.

If you're a love of all things Sol3 Mio then you'll want to head along for these two shows as the group will be going on hiatus for the next couple of years.

'A lot of the songs from the second album we've never performed before, so this will be the first time we've sung them on stage,” says baritone Moses Mackay.

'There will be a bit of an emotional element to this tour as it's always sad to say farewell to friends, but this isn't a final goodbye, it's more like a ‘we'll see you soon'.”

Of the haiatus, Moses says it will be the first time in about four years that each member of the trio will be able to 'do our own thing”.

He plans on heading over to Europe to audition for schools in London and Italy, while his tenor cousins Pene and Amitai Pati will look to head over to San Francisco.

'I believe it [the haiautus] will make Sol3 Mio stronger when we come back, it'll bring a fourth dimension when we hit the road again.”

When looking back on their career to date, Moses says it's crazy and humbling how Sol3 Mio's popularity has skyrocketed since they formed back in 2013.

'At the same time it's a tribute to New Zealand you know? I think it's something that we do really appreciate, it's just that there hasn't been anyone putting it forward like Sol3 mio in the past.”

In a way, the formation of Sol3 Mio also sounds like it was written in the stars, with Moses explaining he met Amitai and Pene separately - without realising they were family.

'I met Amitai when were member of the NZ Youth Choir,” he recalls. 'I was walking onto the bus and he was the only brown face on-board, so I walked to the back, sat next to him and said ‘hey bro'.

'Pene was the same. We were at university together, I walked into the lecturer room and there was one brown guy right in the corner, so I snuck my way across, sat next to Pene and said ‘hey bro'.

'We Polynesians use the word ‘bro' a lot, but with Sol3 Mio it really is a brotherhood. When we first met and started making the connections we were like ‘hang on bro, are we related?',” he says laughing again.

With the trio set to perform two show in Tauranga in March, in a small way life has somewhat come full circle for Sol3 Mio.

Moses remembers the two shows they performed at Tauranga's Holy Trinity Church back in 2013.

'It was right at the start of Sol3 Mio and we were fundraising to go to Wales. We actually got a flat tyre on the way down, we had no chauffeurs then,” he jokes.

'I remember when the tyre blew we were frantically rushing around and calling people saying ‘ah sorry, we might be a bit late.

'I've always liked Tauranga, we've got a lot of great memories of the place so the boys and I are looking forward to getting back there. Hopefully no flat tyres this time, fingers crossed.”
