Welcome promise of cool spells

When will it end? Hot, sticky and humid all week, now soaking wet and continuing to be uncomfortably muggy. Everyone's complaining.

But there's relief in store.

Sitcky, muggy weather has started off February. File photo.

While February has started abnormally warm, the MetService says temperatures in the Bay of Plenty will revert to more typical levels for this time of the year. That's warm and dry.

By month's end we may experience a relatively cool spell across the country.

January was wetter than usual for most regions, with lots of humid subtropical air. Temperatures reflected this with a big swing from cooler than usual conditions at the start of 2016 to warmer than usual at the end of the month.

It was a pattern which was not standard El Nino.

MetService says the Bay of Plenty can expect 'volatile” rainfall – significant episodes of rain interspersed with longer dry spells.

The Bay can expect a weak signal for a wet phase in the third week of the month.

Total rainfall for February is expected to be normal to above normal.
