Video evidence in Welcome Bay murder

Crucial CCTV footage will be shown to a jury of 12 as the trial for murder accused Raymond Green take place.

Green, 34, is accused of killing 33-year-old Ilya Olegorich Kojevnikov on Welcome Bay Road on February 2, 2015.

This morning, Crown prosecutor Anna Pollett explained how evidence from 30 witnesses over the next two weeks will show how the accused allegedly turned the car around to drive deliberately at Ilya.

During the two week trial, the jury will be required to watch CCTV footage of Ilya Kojevnikov's death.

Ilya had been drinking home brew vodka and fruit juice at a Welcome Bay Road address and had left the house about 10.45pm to go and play pool.

As the 'souped up” Subaru went past, Ilya swung a foot at it. The kick didn't connect, but Green is accused of U-turning the car a short way up the road and driving back at Ilya at speed.

The impact was loud. One resident, who came out of their house, said it sounded like a car hit a post, says Anna.

'But it wasn't a post.”

Also using CCTV footage, the Crown will show that before the hit and run, Green took over the driving from the sober driver at Bayfair, says Anna.

He bought a box of beer at Countdown and ordered the sober driver out, saying words to the effect that he would show them how that car should be driven.

Green is then alleged to have driven down the highway towards Te Puke, turning onto the eastern end of Welcome Bay Road.

After Ilya's death, the black Subaru – which Green is accused of being the driver of - did not stop but continued driving to a Papamoa home.

While here, Anna says Green prepared himself a feed and considered how to conceal or destroy the damaged vehicle.

The crash scene is directly opposite the Welcome Bay Foodmarket. The Crown will show the jury the Bayfair CCTV video, as well as the Welcome Bay Foodmarket's security camera footage.

On Friday, the jury will be taken to Welcome Bay for a site visit of the scene.

During the trial the jury will also hear the results of an analysis of the foodmarket CCTV images to give an estimate of the speed of the vehicle at impact.

The vehicle was located the following day behind Green's house in Papamoa Beach Road. It didn't belong to him. The registered owner will attest to the condition of the vehicle the start of the evening.

'The Crown case is the damage speaks for itself,” says Anna.
