Power cut to 3700 properties

Power was cut to around 3700 properties in the Western Bay due to a fault on the electricity network.

Powerco network coordination manager Dean Stevenson says customers in Maketu, Pukehina and surrounding areas were affected by the power cut which occurred at 2.30am yesterday.

Power was out to homes in the Western Bay of Plenty yesterday. File photo.

'Supply was progressively restored throughout the day and power was back on to everyone at 7.45pm.”

Dean says a combination of factors resulted in power being out longer than usual.

'Due to the high demand of electricity at the time we were unable to provide the normal back-up supply to affected customers. Powerco apologises for the inconvenience caused by the power cut.”

The cause of the fault is being investigated.

Powerco is New Zealand's second largest electricity and gas distribution utility with around 430,000 consumers connected to its networks.

Having no power for 17 hours is a bit more than an 'inconvenience'

Would be nice to know reason for fault. "We" are usually left in the dark over cause.
