Truck rolls near Paengaroa

UPDATE – 11.30am: A truck driver has sustained moderate injuries after his trailer unit rolled on State Highway 33 this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the truck and trailer had been travelling towards the new Paengaroa roundabout when the trailer rolled.

'For some reason the trailer has overturned and the load of timber it was carrying has fallen over the roadway,” says Ian.

'The truck was the only vehicle involved and the driver is in the process of being transported to Tauranga Hospital for observation.”

Police and emergency services are currently at the scene and a diversion through the Fruit Lands forecourt on SH33 is now in place.

Ian says traffic is currently following reasonably freely through the scene of the crash but expects the diversion to be in place for a period time while the timber and trailer unit are recovered.

A lamp post near the roundabout is believed to have suffered damage as a result of the crash and PowerCo have been called to the scene to assess the damage.

EARLIER:

Power lines are down and live wires have been left exposed after a truck rolled on State Highway 33, near Paengaroa.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says it appears one truck and trailer unit is involved in the crash.

"The westbound lane is blocked. It appears two truck may be involved," says Ian.

"Information from the NZ Fire Service is that one truck has rolled and one is upright."

Ian says police are at the scene.

One of the trucks involved appears to be a B-train carrying a load of timber.

A witness says the truck was carrying around six tonne of 4X2 timber.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays until the scene is cleared.

I think the bend may be a factor but you would think they would be slowing down having seen the massive roundabout sign? Trucks out of control seems to happen a lot doesn't it.

Unsecured Load

It's not rocket science - slow down and secure your load!! with the 100's of trucks using this intersection on a daily basis the professional drivers DON'T have a problem. More driver training required in this case.

That roundabout has the tightest entrance bend on it in the country. But nothing stops you from rash comments like the next one in your post about lots of trucks out of control.Maildrop you are WRONG. Trucks do more accident free kilometers than cars do so they are much safer on the road compared to cars and are involved in less at fault accidents. Oh but you are a car driver... There lays the problem...

Check your facts Ken. The truck has rolled on the moderate right hand bend which is before the sharp left turn at the roundabout which you are on about. Even if that entry is the sharpest in the country (!) it is irrelevant. Truck was going too fast. Simple as that. It happens here with greater regularity than with trucks overseas. They just seem to leave the road, and that is down to speed. It's very simple. You are right about car drivers here. Lots of very bad ones. I didn't realise there was a competition between Truckies and car drivers for who's worst. I've driven both and never crashed in either. I tended to take bends a bit slower in the lorry though.

We dont know the facts yet. Even the police are not saying what has caused the crash. It looks like it could be speed but who knows until the CVIU release their findings. Where are your statistics that prove nz trucks crash more than overseas? Are you comparing apples with apples? Nz roads are some of the most twisty in the world and are 3rd world compared to lots overseas.

The only sensible comment

Posted on 10-02-2016 08:54 | By How about this view!

Has come from "Fourth Estate". "More driver training required". Very few of us, having passed our driving test, have our driving abilities reviewed. If you look at most reported incidents you will find excuses. Driving abilities need to be reviewed by professional instructors on a regular basis, otherwise poor driving skills and bad habits increase over time.

As the driver of the car that witnessed the accident I can assure Ken that the truck was not approaching us at a speed that caused me any concern. Has anyone considered the load may have shifted prior to the point where the trailer started to fish tail? In response to 4th Estate the strops etc broke during the crash.

Thanks for your commnts which back up my point. I dont like to jump to conclusions as per some people below. Most truck drivers i know reakon that roundabout is a dangerous one as you cannot see thru it. You can only see cars when they are right on you especially when coming from the Whakatane end.

I AGREE WITH KENWORTH LOGGER NZTA ARE ANAL ABOUT ROUNDABOUTS, THEY ARE TO TIGHT AND ALIGNMENT IS BACK TO FRONT, WHAT WOULD US TRUCK DRIVERS KNOW THEY (NZTA)SHOULD GO FOR A RIDE IN A TRUCK AND SEE WHAT WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH,THE OTHER DAY AT THE ROUNDABOUT AT PAPAMOA I NOTICED THAT THERE IS NO SIGN AT ENTRANCE TO IT TO SAY TURN RIGHT TO TEPUKE A CAMPERVAN WITH OVERSEAS VISITORS WERE CONFUSED HOW TO GET THERE,ALSO BUILDING A ROUNDABOUT IN TEPUNA IS A NO NO,ALL IT NEEDS IS THE SPEED PUT DOWN TO 50 AND POLICE,THEY PUT THE SPEED DOWN FROM 80 TO 60 BECAUSE OF 2 WHINGERS OUT THERE, WHY JUST WHY CAN THEY NOT DO THAT AT TEPUNA AND SAVE $2 MILLION FOR THE SAKE OF2 50 KM SIGNS,THAT WOULD BE TO EASY AS THIS WOULD TAKE A LOT OF PLANNING AND MEETINGS.

Totally agree with you. Certainly not the safest roundabout in the country. Maybe they designed it so the local CVIU would have a lot more trade come their way.,,,,,
