Police and emergency services were called to the scene at 12.15pm after reports of a missing 16-year-old boy.

'It appears a group of teenagers were jumping off the bridge and one has landed on top of the 16 year old victim, causing him to go under the water,” says Senior Sergeant Andrew Townsend.

He says friends and family located the boy about 10 minutes after the incident but efforts to revive the boy were unsuccessful.

It is reported emergency services worked for almost 1.5 hours to try to revive the teenager.

'Police are investigating this matter and our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time,” says the Senior Sergeant.

Stuff.co.nz reports the scene was earlier cordoned off as firefighters and rescue helicopter crew members shielded the person from view with tarpaulins.

A group of people were seen at the scene comforting each other as they witnessed the event.

No further information is available at this stage.
