Family fun in Greerton

Tauranga pastor Tina Salisbury says building a strong sense of community is the main goal behind the Greerton Family Festival.

It's the second year the festival has been held and yesterday's action packed fun day at the Greerton Village School was a success despite the threat of rain Tina says.

About 1000 people attended the family event where the Greerton community had the opportunity to meet each other in a friendly, fun-filled day.

'It went well, despite the weather… amazingly we hardly got any rain out in Greerton compared to all the rain that was going on around us. So yeah the weather was a challenge and I think a lot of people perhaps stayed away because they thought it was raining where they were,” Tina says.

'I think for us, it's just great to see families having fun together. Just the connections that were made with some of the agencies that work to strengthen individuals and strengthen families. To come and participate and connect with the community that gathered.

'There were wonderful connections with the agencies that came and people were able to find out and get some resources and see what's going on. It was a great time for the families to connect and have fun together for free.”

One of the ways those attending could connect and have fun was through the many stalls and a giant Foosball set up at the event.

'Oh yeah, that [Foosball] was a lot of fun. That and the jousting and the waterslides, those were really used all day.”

Tina says the event was made possible by all the volunteers from the Journey Vineyard Church and there are plans to hold another one next year.

'Yeah I think so. These things are always a lot of work but on the day when you see people come together and connecting, we had some people that had come for the second time but they met family members they didn't even know were around.

'Some of them hadn't even met before but suddenly realised they were family. There were all sorts of amazing connections going on. I think it provides a unique place for the community to kind of gather and have a fun day out for free.”
