Emergency services are rushing to the scene of another serious crash in the Karangahake Gorge, near Waihi.

It's the second crash today in the area. A spokesman for the Northern Fire Communications Centre says emergency services were called to a head-on collision between two cars on State Highway 2 Karangahake Gorge.

The spokesman says it was too early to say how many people were involved in the crash.

The incident is believed to have taken place about 0.6km southeast of Waihi, 5km east of Waikino and 5.7km northwest of Waimata.

One SunLive reader called to say he had just seen an ambulance racing out of Katikati and towards the scene.

'Police have stopped us and said the road could be closed for a few hours and they were turning cars back on both sides of the crash.”

Police say diversions have been put in place motorists are asked to use the Kopu Hikuae Road from Thames or SH29 Kaimai to access the Bay of Plenty, similarly the reverse if travelling towards the Waikato.

More details to come.

Why have we so many idiot drivers on our roads? This is the second head on today in the same area.Whoever is at fault (if still alive )should be made to foot the bill for all sevices involved and lose their licence indefinitely.Twenty years ago you very seldom heard of head ons, now it seems to be every day.

Would pay to know the facts behind the incident before making any assumptions.

Back in the day the media was not so efficient, also they happened so often they didnt bother reporting them all. Read the declining road death statistics.
