Police urge drivers to be safe

Police are urging drivers to take responsibility for their actions and drive smartly with Waitangi weekend off to a tragic start with four people losing their lives on the road.

"It's an incredibly sad and frustrating start to the long weekend," says Superintendent, Steve Greally, National Road Policing manager.

"It tragic for those families who are now dealing with the grief and aftermath of a road death."

Steve says drivers need to take responsibility every time they get behind the wheel or on their bike.

'Make sure you drive to the weather conditions, if not for yourself, then do it for those who love you and want you to be safe, and for the others who share the road with you."

He says making smart decisions on the road is done by following the basic road safety rules.

'These include checking your speed, driving to the conditions, avoiding alcohol, taking rest breaks and always wearing your seatbelt.

"Most drivers do a great job, and we congratulate them for making sound decisions. It's the mistakes and poor judgement of the risk takers who put the lives of the innocent in danger."

It is not working!

Yesterday I was driving along the TEL following a car that was travelling at 108 kph and driving well. A little further on we came up behind an elderly driver doing 75 kph in the right hand lane holding everyone up. I eventually ended up following another vehicle from Domain Road, along Tara into Parton and then along Beach Road. Not once was an indicator used to let others know where he was going. The police are targetting the guy doing 108 but which of the 3 is more liable to cause an accident. Come on boys in blue, you have this thing terribly wrong. Speed is NOT the problem and your campaign is NOT working. Target the bad, inconsiderate, drivers instead and things will improve.

Wrong again

The link between speed and increased chances of crashing is PROVEN. What you're saying is you are a good driver so leave me alone to drive as fast as I see fit. The cops can't allow this because they don't have a crystal ball and don't know you personally and haven't vetted your driving! If they let everyone drive as they see fit, their only job would be cleaning up the mess after the crash has happened. There has to be a limit and it has to be enforced. Why can't people understand this? I suppose if they're not bright enough to understand this they can keep picking up fines, aka tax on the stupid, and keep moaning about it on here. It won't change, speed limits will come down not up, as the number of vehicles increases.

I am not for one moment saying that there should be no speed limit. I am merely pointing out that police should not be worrying so much about a few kph and ignoring the real causes of accidents ie EXCESSIVE speed, and BAD, INCONSIDERATE driving.
