The Waitangi Day Dawn Service at Hopukiore (Mount Drury) is cancelled because of the weather.
Tauranga city council staff made the call to cancel the open air service at 5am.
Metvuw's forecast for 7am. Plotted by James McGregor
The dawn service was to start at 6.30am with a karakia (blessing) by Tangata Whenua, followed by a community service and open forum that gives participants a chance to share their thoughts on Waitangi Day.
The event was originally initiated by Maori elders and members of the Tauranga Moana District Maori Council in the late 1970s, and held on the summit of Mauao.
But as its popularity grew and participants aged, it was transferred to the nearby Hopukiore where it continues to play a significant part in Tauranga's historical heritage.

Our most historic day is cancelled?, we may have it next year if weather permits!!!, what a bloody load of old cobblers!!!, what next... telling your child they cannot have a birthday this year because it is raining, I find this unbelievably degrading that our National day can be treated as another festival event by people who should know better, sorry the forecast for ANZAC day this year is atrocious, apologies to those who died for our great nation but due to a few people getting wet we are going to cancel this year, thanks TCC

So totally agree with you. People can make there own decision as to whether they will attend.

Who says Waitangi Day is our national day ? If it was it would be called New Zealand Day as it once was. TCC staff were only thinking of the welfare of intending attendees when they cancelled it. Obviously you cannot keep some people happy no matter what is done.
