REVIEW: Beers, burgers and beats

We know we're heading into the second long weekend, but SunLive reporter Zoe Hunter had so much fun at On the Lawn last weekend that she wanted to share her excitement.

It's safe to say I put on a few kilos during the long weekend. Taste testing some of New Zealand's best craft beer, wine and food at On The Lawn satisfied the lips, but not the hips.

But I purposely scheduled in a ‘cheat day' for Sunday, knowing I'd want to guzzle down as much food and drink as my piggy puku (belly) could handle at the annual outdoor celebration.

Priorities in order, my friends and I went straight to the tasting tent to fill up our plastic cups with a taster of our picks of the day: Good George doris plum cider and Moa Festive IPA.

The hints of locally sourced doris plums with a very sweet-but-sour twinge of the cider, with the big, bold and fruity aromas of the American-style IPA proved refreshing under the heat of the day.

Thirst quenched, we then made our way to Gasoline Alley – the dedicated gourmet food area featuring New Zealand's best food trucks.

It was the supreme dumplings from Johney's Dumpling House for an entrée, before we were due for round two of drinks and it was off to the Lake Chalice tent I went. 'A Lake Chalice sav please,” I said, ordering my favourite glass of white.

Glasses topped up, we set up our picnic blankets in front of the stage to be serenaded by the soothing sounds of Auckland band ‘Sal Valentine and The Babyshakes'.

The clock ticked 6pm and our bellies were rumbling, so we ventured back to Gasoline Alley for dinner.

Spoiled for choice, our decision was easy as we lined up at Rye American Kitchen for the Trailer Trash Burger – a panko crumbed macaroni and cheese pattie served with barbecue pulled pork, caramalised onions, and creamy coleslaw on a soft white bun.

My mouth waters just typing the ingredients, with this Trailer Trash Burger first-timer definitely now a new fan. Rye's burger was a huge hit with my friends, who ordered two more.

Tag Burger also made it to our picnic, with another order put in for the vegie burger stuffed with the scrumptiousness of a falafel pattie, beetroot, avocado, lettuce and tasty sauce.

Washing the food down with a few more glasses of sav, this reporter put on her dancing shoes and boogied the night away to the sounds of Sweet Mix Kids.

I'm usually the annoying party guest requesting to the DJ to play Michael Jackson, so my face lit up when we got to wriggle our hips to MJ's top hits.

All in all, On The Lawn 2016 was a fun way to spend a lazy Sunday. If I was to have one very small grizzle, the idea of loading bracelets with cash made it a speedy process to purchase food and drink…however I'm still wondering how to retrieve the remaining funds still loaded onto the card.

I'm also not looking forward to working extra hard at the gym this week to rid the unwanted, but very tasty, kilos.
