Island living in Tauranga Harbour

The theft of a tarpaulin could lead to the eviction of two people from their summer harbourside camp on Rat Island.

The tarpaulin became part of the lining of a beachside hot pool, created by damming the outflow from the Motel pool on the other side of Turret Road.

Neil Phllips went across to the island, where at least two people have been living since before Christmas, and was promised a replacement. It didn't happen, so he complained to police about the theft.

'This was last year,” says Neil.

'It's been there for a long time collecting a lot of vagrants, homeless people, drunks and whatever.”

He also went to the health department to complain about the homeless washing in the hot pool. And the city council, and the regional council.

'They are all passing the buck really,” says Neil.

'It's a pool. There's laws and regulations in this country for swimming pools. It's not fenced off or anything.

'I went and saw the police again, and on Sunday had a call from police. They've taken it off the constable the job was given to and said they'll get somebody to see me Monday.”

At 8am there was a knock on the door and a couple of bobbies were there to be shown the pool, before walking across the mudflat to talk to the alleged thief.

'The first comment when they come back is ‘gosh they've got a good set up over there, haven't they? The pool, they have made quite a good job of it, haven't they really?” says Neil.

Apart from the tarpaulin, Neil recognises the value of Rat Island as a homeless residence.

'Put all these people out there, if that's where they want to go. More than three quarters of the time they can't get ashore to bother us because the tide's in.”

He's not worried about people living on the island, but he wants the thief of his tarpaulin charged, regardless how good the camp is.

Rat Island or Motuopuhi is owned by the Tauranga City Council.

Council staff say they are aware two people are living on the island, and staff have been in discussion with them about moving them on.

Theft is theft, no matter what, or by whom. So, why no justice for the victim Where is all the bodily wastes going to at the island ? Into the harbour ?

C'mon Niel looks like a piece of polythene.Let them alone and get yourself a hobby. Persistance is the key if you complain enough eventually someone will take you seriously. Homeless people have to live somewhere.

Neil you sound like

a right misery guts! Yes they shouldn't have taken the tarp, but if you knew where it was why didn't you just retrieve it - I think the police have bigger fish to fry if you can resolve it yourself. And do you wash before you swim in the ocean - I don't know ANYONE who does. And fencing it off... come on Neil. Have you've never peed in the ocean Seesee? Anyone who enters the water generally pees in it, rich, poor and homeless alike. Are they leaving rubbish all over the island? The Police mentioned they had a good set-up, not that the island had been trashed. Sounds like some people just need to lighten up a bit

They're homeless and you're worried about littering. Have some humanity. Police please turn a blind eye and let the homeless people wash themselves...

how can they be "homeless" when they have a home?, I am all for putting all the street dwellers out there, dredge the channel, give them some vegetable seeds and a cow, and let them sort themselves out, they can find out real quick what it's like pooing in your own nest!!!.

Leave them alone

Neil havent you got better things to do than whinge about the homeless having a bath and it mot being fenced off. I tell you what, ill buy you a tarpauling. May be then you can get on with your life and leave the homeless alone.

Neil, for heavens sake...Leave them alone...I hope that you are never put into this predicament and have to put up with whingey people like yourself. At least they are trying to make good of a bad situation. You need as stated in other comments , find something to do ...not bother these folks.

Free rent for an island, could we encourage them to go to say Motiti, that would be a lot better.

I'm more concerned that they will be treating the island like they do doorways and stairwells around the city, crapping and peeing everywhere for someone else to clean up. In this case, raw sewage being washed into the harbour along with litter. Have some respect for the rest of the city, the homeless don't have a good track record for doing it.

There is a toilet block adjacent to the alleged pool, just because they are homeless doesn't mean they cant use one. It says a lot about a community and their attitude towards the least fortunate in it. I see some only stopped just short of suggesting having them incarcerated or shot.

In the article it says Neil would like his tarpaulin returned or replaced as it was stolen! It must be a good quality large one to act as a pool liner. Neil also says he is happy for the people to be there. It's about the THEFT!

People have to live somewhere. The "have's" in their place, the "have nots" in theirs. Maybe there should be a day in the year when people have to swap - the have's with the "have nots". Maybe there would be a bit more human concern and something real would be done to help. On another tangent, the Hotel Hot Pool, are you discharging your hot pool straight into the harbour? May a visit from the environment police to see if this is ok?! The old saying, "those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"

The city's sewerage all ends up in the Harbour/sea sooner or later. Thiers is simply a more direct route.

Cant see the problem with that?

Not agreeing with ...

Posted on 10-02-2016 11:56 | By 2cents

the terms being used here ... fortunate, less fortunate ... most kiwi's work long and hard to achieve a home to live in! We pay our rates to have our waste disposed of in a hygienic manner (through a treatment process before entering the harbour JAFFA!). I would be horrified to encounter human waste on our streets (fully agree with your comments squeaky). There is also a homeless shelter down on lower Elizabeth Street and other avenues that can be utilised by the homeless. Squatting, pun intended, in our harbour should not be an option!

This puzzles me!

Posted on 11-02-2016 13:31 | By Cydifor

I know that everyone in NZ who do not have a job then receive the unemployment benefit. Therefore there is no need to be homeless even if you live in a squat with several other people - at least it is a roof over your head and you make it into a home. Sure the Sallies would provide a spot of furniture for the really needy. Surely being homeless is a choice and should we feel sorry for those who choose this option? I know there are also generous allowances from social welfare to pay for the high cost of renting. Am I a rotten human being when I feel less than charitable towards those who make this choice knowing they actually do have other options?
