Locals show disgust at TPPA signing

Carloads of Tauranga people are driving to Auckland this morning to protest at the signing of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement at the Sky City Casino.

From the TPPA Action Tauranga, they will be joining what one of the organisers expects will be a crowd of at least 10,000 people expected to begin marching down Queen Street at noon.

TPPA protests are taking place around the country.

Barry Coates from It's Our Future, says they are planning a ‘family friendly' protest march.

'We are marching from Aotea Square at the top of Queen Street down to the bottom at Brittomart. We will be assembling at mid-day,” says Barry.

'It will be a peaceful family affair, lots of colour, lots of passion, lots of anger against the government but entirely non-violent. We are not going up to Sky City. We respect the rights of other protestors to do so, but we are a safe and family friendly march.”

People are outraged that the government is not listening. Opinion polls say the majority of people don't want the TPPA, says Barry.

'We‘ve had one referendum on the flag and we are going to have another one. But we haven't had a referendum on the TPPA, so there needs to be democracy around this agreement and that's why we are getting a big march of people who can carry that message.”

Pro-democracy group ‘Real Choice' has a different agenda. It's planning a demonstration at Sky City to shut down the signing ceremony.

The groups plans blocking the streets leading to the Sky City Convention Centre where dignitaries of 12 countries are meeting to sign and agree to the terms of the TPPA.

In anticipation of an armed police presence, Real Choice plans to use tactics of non-violent civil disobedience, forming human blockades by linking arms and passive resistance to hold the TPPA Free Zone for as long as they can, says Real Choice Spokesperson Julia Espinoza on the site's facebook page.

'Petitions, marches and lobbying have their place; but now the TPP is being signed on our doorstep, and we feel it is time to try to shut it down and create a TPPA Free Zone,” says Julia.

'This deal was negotiated in secret, which we feel was undemocratic - and since the release of the final document the government is still attempting to shut the door on democracy by ignoring the growing opposition of an informed public.”

Meanwhile, on Facebook Tauranga resident Yvette Rhia is calling for those who cannot make it to Auckland to strike in protest.

'Take a break from everything you should be doing & make a stand against our goverment!! Stay home from work, keep kids home from school/daycare etc, don't go to uni/tech, appointments, court, shopping,” says a post on Facebook.

'If it's not urgent just don't do it lol!! I have seen so many people complaining lately that either can't be bothered doing something about it or don't know how to so this could be an easy way of causing a public outcry that may actually be heard!

'I challenge you to help bring Aotearoa to a standstill in protest of the TPPA signing.”

John's legacy

The corporates and business will get the benefits of any gains by the TPP.It will not trickle down to wages they will just get bigger profits. This will be John Key's legacy not even a new flag.Overseas corporate control of some things New Zealand.Too much secrecy and signed before parliament resumes.Details were only released before signing due to pressure.

Come on even Helen supports TPPA

NZ would only come to a standstill if the anti TPPA brigade actually worked in the first place. Interesting that they drive cars which obviously get to NZ through free trade. As for a strike I suggest those on a benefit strike for a whole year by not taking their benefits, which interestingly enough actually come from taxes paid for working for businesses that earn overseas dollars through competitive trade!!!!

democracy Key style

This is not true democracy. This is democracy John Key style. If we can waste $26 million on a ridiculous flag referendum, then surely us kiwis, who the politicians treat with annoying disgust, should have a say in the signing, or not, of this secret agreement. BTW Annalist, I strongly oppose the TPPA and have never been on a benefit or any taxpayer funded handout.

How naive and judgmentally you are....There is only ONE person that I know going to Auckland who raises a child on his own, and then I am not sure if doesn't do part time work....Most I know DO WORK and have taken annual leave to attend this rally. so leave your petty judgements to yourself...so I will state the obvious....You are obviously a Nat supporter.

Sorry Colleen

I hate to disappoint your prejudgement of me as a Nat, but the difference between Nat and Labour seems only to be one of talent. The great Labour PM Helen even supports the TPPA. It seems all about more trade with less regulations. Trade is important for NZ to actually earn an income to import all those things like cars etc and to earn money to actually pay things like benefits. But naturally there are always those who see conspiracies, even me sometimes. The great thing is the photos show the protesters to seem well nourished under the current Nats. Life is good, smell the roses.

its not a conspiracy

This is a ceremonial signing only. Each representative will take it back to their individual countrys government to be then looked at by Senates and MMP parties or whatever. Then public submissions will be presented and then within two years they have to agree and sign or start all over again which is what I think will possibly happen

Only 800 turn out

So only a few hundred turn out for the rally despite being trucked in from all over the country. Most kiwis realise that trade is good. The kiwifruit pickers , the wharfies, the shelf filler at the Warehouse all benefit from more trade. Imagine all the gains that Iwi owned Hukapack will make from having no tariffs for goods to Japan. This is all good for New Zealanders. An historic day.

Doesn't really what your political preferences are, you had a preconceived idea of what type of people the protesters are. Why do you go on about BENEFITS? bit of bashing does not go astray does it. The TPPA has 9 chapters, ONLY 5 are to do with trade.....when something is negotiated in SECRET, is never good for democracy. WHY DOES EVERYONE BELIEVE THE WHOLE 29 CHAPTERS ARE TO DO WITH TRADE? Do some research! Benefit Bashing says more about who you are than anything else.
