A woman tourist has had to be rescued by emergency services after falling off rocks near the walking track at the base of Mauao (Mount Maunganui).

It is understood the woman who was with several family members fell into the water and police, surf lifesavers were sent out to rescue the person about 1.15pm today.

Several family members also becamed trapped and had to be rescued by an IRBs.

A SunLive reporter says police have just arrived and are rushing to the area where the incident took place is at the northern end of the mountain.

It is understood the person involved is believed to be from out of town and was "shaken" by the incident but not seriously injured.
