Permanent i-Site proposed for Mount

Among the first of Tauranga City Council's tasks of the New Year is to time table the discussion about a new, permanent i-Site in Mount Maunganui.

There is a proposal to have an i-Site at or near the Port of Tauranga to cater for the continuing growth in the cruise ship passengers visiting the port.

Tourism Bay of Plenty CEO Rhys Arrowsmith outside the I-port at its 2013 opening. File photo.

This season, around 84 ships are expected to bring 166,700 passengers with them.

This is a 15 per cent increase on the number of passengers that visited last season. It's estimated that visitors will spend around $40.5 million – up 6.3 per cent on last season's figures.

'We are aware the numbers are going to grow considerably over the next five years,” says Tauranga City Council mayor Stuart Crosby.

'The same number of vessels roughly, but they are going to be larger.”

The current I-port that marshals the cruise ship passengers, providing information about attractions available in the wider Bay of Plenty, and arranging connections with local operators, consists of two containers and a tent-like roof, and can only be used for about another year.

'They have a couple of containers and a roof which probably has one more year left in it with a bit of a do up, so they are staring to talk to us about a more permanent piece of infrastructure to service the cruise ship industry as well as the more usual visitor industry,” says Stuart.

Tourism Bay of Plenty has opened the discussions. The priority is the I-port adjacent or within the port. A second priority is whether there will be some sort of information centre as part of the Phoenix car park redevelopment.

'We have probably at best 12 months to firm up some ideas, because if there is to be a new one constructed, it will have to get underway within a 12 month period for the 2017/18 cruise ship season,” says Stuart.

'It will be a permanent building. We will be having discussions with the port about access. It's about making sure we get the most of the opportunity from the cruise ship industry, and if you don't have proper facilities you don't maximise the opportunity.”

A possible location is at Coronation Park, somewhere along the port border.

While the Port of Tauranga's $50 million capital dredging programme, currently underway, is opening the port to large passenger ships, including the newest Royal Caribbean cruise ship the 348 metre long, 167,800 tonne Ovation of the Seas, due to be launched in Germany this April and currently scheduled to make a Tauranga port call during the 2016/17 season.

Ovation of the Seas will be the largest cruise liner ever to visit New Zealand and carries 4900 passengers and 1300 crew - the equivalent of 12 Airbus A380s arriving at the same time.

In contrast the next cruise ship expected at the port is the 4,200tonne expedition ship Caledonian Sky on Saturday.

Caledonian Sky operates in the 'niche luxury cruise market” whose ticket price for the 100 passengers on board includes wine at lunch and dinner, a high-brow guest speaker programme and in-depth excursions.

What is that white block (permanent) building with the high brown roof, and it's own parking area in Salisbury Ave? Who owns it? Where in Salisbury Ave is it? Coronation Park? Just three years of meddling and confusion, chopping and changing they are now proposing something entirely new, back where Tourism BOP and the Council said it wasn't working before? What about the other proposal in 2014 http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/42811-new-4m-cultural-centre-unveiled.html These guys shouldn't be in charge of tiddly winks let alone Tauranga's future.

You mean near where it used to be? What a waste of money shifting it was!!

as it was

Posted on 06-01-2016 12:53 | By hapukafin

Im not the town planner but for simple old me I thought the old spot was ideal, next to the police and right in the path of the cities most populated tourist thoroughfare from the port and on the right side of the road for motorists entering to Pilot Bay and to the mount. Our council is hell bent on wasting rate payers money.

I site

Posted on 06-01-2016 12:56 | By A e g

That could be a good idea for an I site but while the council considers that option why not have an area for musicians ie Brass Bands entertain area before 7/11 a band entertained the cruise ship passengers on Wharf and was very well appreciated. If this was included it could be a big draw card for others to entertain.

Councillors Should Be Shot

Posted on 06-01-2016 13:05 | By Jitter

What an incompetant lot of councillors in TCC. Presumably the previous Information Centre at Coronation Park was shut down on the "expert" opinion of council staff. I expect Tourism Bay of Plenty had a hand in that also. What a pack of clowns, Councillors, TCC staff and Tourism BOP making these decisions. More uneccessary cost to move and set up a new permanent Information Centre. Unbelievable ! No I will change that to totally believable based on many decisions TCC have made. Whoever was involved in making the decision to move the Information Centre should be made to resign. Public opinion at the time was against the move but did TCC listen. No way. The arguments being used to move it back were put forward by the public before it was moved to it's current location. What a pack of clowns.

What,s Next Stuart!!!!!

You never cease to amuse us.But wait there,s more. I,m sure you would love to have the Cruise Ships berthing at your new pier down on the waterfront. Now wouldn,t that be a legacy. THE CROSBY PIER. OH Well dreams are free!!!

POT Time to Step Up

Posted on 06-01-2016 15:13 | By laralopes

It is high time the Port of Tauranga (POT) stepped forward to provide a Cruise Terminal for the passengers to disembark into. They are only to happy to take the berthing fee from them and it would be great to provide the passengers with a Terminal to walk into. Maybe when The No 1 Shed is redeveloped the Cruise Temimal could be located on the top floor whilst below the trucks can still operate from below. The passengers could then take a lift or stairs down and exit out into Coronation Park. This would eliminate the need for using so many barriers along the waters edge out onto Sailsbury Avenue.

It's a Bakery

Posted on 06-01-2016 15:19 | By Colleen Spiro

@ CC8...That building is a bakery now, because TCC and TBOP....thought a better spot for the i-site was under the Mount....*shakes head* Same Mayor, same Tourism Boss

Unbelievable!

Posted on 06-01-2016 15:39 | By BJ

We had an I-site for years, well sited, alongside the InterCity bus stop, and alongside the wharves. Idiots decided to close it down, create an I-site of sorts at the Mount campground! Tourism is huge in the Mount, so let's have the I-site be in Willow Street in Tauranga (nobody goes there) and in the Mount campground (????)!! Hopefully the idiot councillors who were responsible for these decisions were kicked off at the last election. For heavens sake get some common sense back into our Council decisions, instead of making stupid decisions like closing an I-site in the top Tourism area, and now considering opening one again- in the same area!

Quite embarrassing really.......

Posted on 06-01-2016 15:48 | By groutby

that we folk have to dredge up the same stuff year after year, when there are a paid few to make these decisions, not stuff things up for out tourist industry..and keep our valued tourists here!...for these "decision makers" who are in business themselves ( I mean actually earning revenue not just gathering it at will)...no-one will come to your shop to purchase if it (our city) is not attractive, no-one will stay long if they do if they are not made welcome in your shop (our information centre(s)...they will leave and continually go to Rotorua for enjoyment and spend there..as I see it, and DO post differently if I am incorrect, but apart from the actual ability to get off a ship onto dry land for awhile, do visitors get a warm and inviting reception (owerwhelm them please..they will remember us!)...why do we always "talk" and not actually"DO"..?

unbelievable

Posted on 06-01-2016 16:11 | By Captain Sensible

You couldn't build a circus tent big enough for these clowns. The incompetence and stupidity from these people should see mass sackings & resignations, but someone will probably get a pay rise for this.

Previous Council

Posted on 06-01-2016 20:26 | By Jitter

I realise the decision to move the I-Site from Coronation Park was made by the previous council. Moving it back somewhere near it's origional location is sensible but at what cost ? Isn't it time the Port of Tauranga, as previously mentioned, put some finance into the development of the new I-Site as they will also reap benefits from it's proposed location. I guess we are looking at some millions of dollars to build and develop the new I-site area. However is this going to stop the majority of passengers off the cruise ships still heading to Rotorua, Taupo etc ? Tourism BOP, TCC and the Tauranga and Mount business communities need to put more sustained effort into attracting the passengers to stay in Tauranga and spend their money.

It's all part of the plan

Posted on 07-01-2016 00:37 | By FunandGames

The old ISITE was no good as tourist could make bookings direct with tour operators cutting out the isite middle man. That's why it was closed. This whole ISITE relocation is designed to give Tourisim BOP first bite/ monopoly to secure bookings from the cruse ships. It's about the profits for Tourisim BOP. So no it's not a shambles, it's well organised from a Tourisim BOP staff security perspective, just not what the general population thought Tourisim BOP's job was.

From a cruise ship passenger's viewpoint it's cheap and shabby. I've asked them. Put some welcome "hosts" with a welcome pack at the bottom of the gangways to begin with. That may distract from the immediate view. The Port of Tauranga are gaining revenue from these ships, but are re-investing nothing back!

Yes the PoT is reinvesting because they are "making" money. TCC and TBOP are a final disaster happening and always will be, let a private operator sort out the passengers. get the official troughers out of it totally.

A little claity in otherwise muddy waters

Posted on 08-01-2016 19:35 | By Murray.Guy

The former Council, as in 'Councillors', did NOT participate in any decision to close the former I-Site next to the Police Station. This was a decision of Tourism Bay of Plenty and it's Board. It was obvious TCC senior staff were very much in the know, which in part highlights why senior management and the Mayor encourage the use of Council Controlled Organisations (CCO) as they disenfranchise the community and elected members for any meaningful input into assets they are liable for and pay for! As usual, absolutely NO accountability. To contemplate for a second using Phoenix Car Park in the Mount CBD, with no vehicle access or parking, for an I-Site further confirms the insanity and arrogance that prevails within Tauranga City Council.

Best plan

Posted on 08-01-2016 22:52 | By Crash test dummies

Don't have anything, as all the management of tours is handled by the ship crews and Rotorua, this lot are just a bunch of leeches clicking the ticket on the way through, that's about all the use and purpose of them all is.

Previous site

Posted on 09-01-2016 11:14 | By Crash test dummies

Perhaps then Murray, the board and senior staff of TCC could explain the logic and reasoning for closing the previous site and moving to the temporary ramshackle setup now? Then that can be extended one wee step more to why they want to move back to Phoenix Car Park in the Mount CBD where in massive challenges remain including that it was not viable (there words). Of course they closed the one next to NZ Police station also very strange as now they are moaning about "new" I see another huge spending like the Greerton Library on a massive unnecessary huge waste of ratepayers money coming yet again.

hand out mentality

Posted on 10-01-2016 15:10 | By Crash test dummies

They closed the previous one then put the hand out to ratepayers to get a new one? If this commercial activity is so good then why can it just pay for one that it wants, needs and suits. Oh that is right they leased that one, next to NZ police ... we want a new one like the mob downtown.

News Flash

Posted on 11-01-2016 15:59 | By Crash test dummies

Recommendation from TCC Councilors, that the 600 odd TCC staff move to the I-site current location and make that the permanent new HQ for TCC. If is good enough for TCC to decide that TBOP can use it then why not TCC itself.

I-site new TCC HQ

Posted on 12-01-2016 14:52 | By Crash test dummies

then of course say around 1/3rd maybe 1/2 will resign. When that happens all will realise that they were not needed anyway.

THIS MESS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE

Posted on 15-01-2016 14:05 | By kellbell

The time to be outraged about this rubbish was 3 years ago where the hell were you Rip Van Winkles at that time .This is what happens when you are apathetic and it then costs residents and ratepayers serious money to rectify this bureaucratic B/S at a later date. OMG/LOL

To Kellbel

Posted on 16-01-2016 16:30 | By Jitter

3 years ago there were lots of people who advised TCC (it was actually Tourism BOP who wanted the origional move) not to move the I-Site as it was a ridiculous move but did anyone listen ? As usual NO as these clowns always know better than the experienced and knowledgeable ratepayers. The whole excercise to move and build another I-Site will cost plenty which Tourism BOP and the Port Authority should pay for not the ratepayers. However if Tourism BOP do pay it will be ratepayers money as they subsidise TBOP.

Tourism BOP can pay

Posted on 17-01-2016 18:11 | By Councillorwatch

As the whole saga of the closing of the original well located info centre at Coronation Park seems tied in with Tourism BOP they can find new premises and pay all the costs. They can also give up their council funding as far as I'm concerned.

@ Councillorwatch

Posted on 18-01-2016 13:28 | By Crash test dummies

Agree on that mate, these decisions are just the usual crazy silliness that TCC and its appendages create for no apparent reason. Ratepayers get the bills for each and every step ... no wonder the Muppet in the photo above is grinning.

Better late than never

Posted on 29-01-2016 12:20 | By MarkFive

At least the CEO had the foresight to resign. However, he may re-surface in another council funded entity or work for his mates at the Port of Tauranga. Point is that for years, TBOP has continued on a path of selfserving preservation, and with the exception a few TV and radio ads and some quickly implemented new branding, they have continued along this path with little regard for their on the ground performance and overall working relationships. Add to this to a constant change of leadership, a lack of firm direction or accountability by TCC, and you have the situation as is. It is staggering how TBOP, Priority One, Downtown Tauranga etc

A new purpose built i-Site in the vicinity of the original Salisbury site. The new facility has two sections, one public, and the other seasonal, restricted to cruise passengers. This section will be linked to POT ships berthing area via secure, covered walkway, which includes the display/showcase/advertising of BOP, our attractions, activities etc

Disgraceful

Posted on 31-01-2016 23:55 | By Jayleen Wood

This Tourism Bay of Plenty crowd are disgraceful. They simply want more and more money for doing very little. They contribute very little and have upset many of us in the local travel industry. The council accepts their well presented annual report of growth and prosperity while the truth is that they are simply in it for themselves and their obedient ancillary organisations that boards of directors and friends. How unprofessional that we give our thousands of cruise ship visitors nothing more than an arrival tent. Council have known about this bad management for years and yet they think they are great. Look around and see all the unhappy people and local businesses and the outcry for change. What do you say now Mr Crosby after you too have stood up for the old boys club year after year? They cannot manage, budget or even satisfy the community.

WE PAY our memberships, WE PAY to display our brochures in the i-Site, WE PAY to be on the internet website, WE PAY to advertise in their printed leaflets, WE PAY commissions (kickbacks) of 15%, WE PAY our permits, licenses and registrations and then WE PAY our special rates, council rates, GST, company and income tax. We pay more than 10 times. Just exactly what do we get in return, and how much more must WE PAY to prop up this TBOP tourism click for years to come?

Now you understand

Posted on 09-02-2016 15:23 | By Stella535

Glad you are starting to understand how things work in Tauranga. Multiple tax payer funded organisations all supporting each others own existence. Each complimenting the other on a job well done so that they can continue to function into the future. Tauranga CBD has been declining for years, but the word is that it is 'repositioning itself' in a changing landscape? How long this will take is anyone's guess. In the meantime you will continue to pay, and pay again in support of the TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL, TOURISM BAY OF PLENTY, PRIORITY ONE, DOWNTOWN TAURANGA ... The fact that many of these organisations contributed to the decline of the Tauranga CBD and tourism insufficiencies is of course overlooked as they are all rewarded with even more funds to - give it another go.

The TBOP boss man has already resigned. I,m sure he was aware of what was coming. Remember it was a TBOP decision alone to close, relocate and monopolise the isites. Alas, there has been no benefit or improvement on service delivery to tourists or residents, just a continued trail of financial losses.

question?

Posted on 09-02-2016 20:43 | By babyG

Wasn,t this the same chap who was the business manager for the Rotorua International Airport? What happened there? Where are all the international flights, or was this also a flash in the pan with more accumulated spending and debt for ratepayers? If so, what,s next I wonder.
