Facebook page 'disappoints' police

Police are disappointed by racist comments posted on what was purported to be a Mount Maunganui New Year's Eve Facebook event page.

Western Bay of Plenty acting area commander Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair says officers are now looking into the page and have followed up on a post from a witness to an alleged assault on a young woman.

However, Karl adds that at this stage no incident fitting the described assault had been reported to police.

Officers are also looking into a video of what appeared to be an assault taking place during an altercation between two groups.

'Police have worked hard over the years together with Tauranga City Council and other community partners to make this event a family friendly one,” says Karl.

'The comments on the Facebook site will form part of the debrief [and] if there is any learning from the information on this site or other information from the community it will be taken into account for next year's planning.”

Karl says the mix of alcohol and young people was still the number one contributor to violence and disorder on New Year's Eve in the area. Pre-loading for events such as this was a factor and will also be looked into.

He is encouraging anyone who was the victim of a crime or witnessed any crime at the event to come forward and speak to police.

Specialist services will also be available to assist any victims who may need support or assistance, says Karl.

I was dropping off my crew, noticed ALOT of Young LOUD Drunken Young ones with LOUD Music from there Cars Vans & Utes openly drinking. i did 2 drop offs and NOT One Police Car came up that area to check - i asked police at the Bridge Check Point is that a banned alcohol area. he was not too sure and said i think areas on the out skits of the Mt are ok. what! are they serious!!! Tawa st is CLOSE enough to the Mt to SPOIL a FAMILY Night as these Young ones can wonder into a No Alcohol Zone area.

I saw packs of teenage boys pretending to be drunk, but were stone cold sober, who, like wolves looking for easy prey, in the form of drunk young girls and having a happy new year hug.... and then taking them to the sand dunes. Saw this several times.
