Crash victims cheat death

The occupants of a car that crashed on a 100km/h stretch of road are lucky to be alive after their car flipped into the air and rolled.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a single vehicle crash on a 100km/h stretch of Rangiatea Road, near Otorohanga, at around 6am today.

'The crash involved a 37-year-old female driver losing control of a late model Ford Falcon that left the road and crashed into a strainer post,” says Inspector Freda Grace.

'The car has then flipped into the air and rolled, however the driver and her two passengers aged 39 and 13-years-old escaped being thrown from the vehicle and potentially serious injuries because they were wearing their seatbelts.

'The car came to a rest on the front lawn of a family's home.”'

Freda says the three occupants' escape was extremely fortunate and highlighted why Police are urging drivers to check their speed.

The crash comes hours after Waikato Police launched their 'Check Your Speed” summer driving campaign, which sees the 4km/h speed tolerance enforced throughout December and January.

'We can achieve far more by not relying on enforcement alone,” says Freda.

'If every motorist thinks of the consequences and checks their speed we will have safer drivers and safer families on our roads.”

As part of the nationwide campaign, Freda says her staff are running a number of initiatives designed to keep drivers and other road users safe.

'A part of this was an operation run in the North Waikato between 1am and 8am yesterday, which saw 22 speeding motorists stopped for excessive speed.

'One motorist lost his licence and faces a charge of dangerous driving after he was stopped travelling in a section of road-works at Rangiriri subject to a temporary speed restriction of 70km/h. He was travelling at 136km/h at 4am.

'The man told the officer he was in a hurry to get home.”

Around the same time, near Ngaruawahia, Freda says another speeding motorist was stopped travelling at 135km/h on a 100km/h stretch of River Road.

The driver may have been travelling at well below the posted speed limit when they lost control.

Why are the police not focusing on the bad driver like this. Instead they go on and on about 4 km an hour crap. This is the sort of person your looking for, The Bad driver!!!!

Missing the point?

What the 4km/hr does is smooth the traffic flow and in turn reduces the number of over-takers. Hence 'we' are reduced to travelling in convoys and bad drivers are so so easy to see and be weeded out with a ticket.

Clearly to sustain this amount of damage the car was travelling at quite a high speed. I applaud and support the police for every move they make to try to reduce the speed on our roads. An excellent starting point is to ping every driver who exceeds any speed limit anywhere. Unfortunately our penalties are too low. In most cases they should be increased by 4 or 5 times. People who sneak over the speed limit are not being fair on the majority of GOOD motorists who respect these limits. Only POOR motorists feel the need to speed and then bad-mouth the police when they are caught.
