Rescue double header on Sunday

A jet ski with mechanical issues and a small vessel being towed by a yacht have kept the Tauranga Coastguard busy over the last few days.

On Sunday, TECT Rescue dealt with a 'double header” of rescues from 3pm.

'First off was a jet ski with mechanical issues who needed a tow back from Matakana Island to Pilot Bay,” says Tauranga Coastguard via their Facebook page.

'Whilst dealing with that, a request was received to assist a small vessel which was under tow from a yacht from outside 'A' Beacon, off the entrance to the Tauranga Harbour.

'The sea state wasn't brilliant, but the small vessel was towed safely back to the ramp without issue.”

At about 9am, a vessel was reported to have struck an object and suffered damage to their stern drive off Motiti Island.

'Once again, Maketu Coastguard were dispatched on Eastpack Rescue to ensure the safety of the vessel, and begin the tow back to Tauranga.

'TECT Rescue met them halfway back, and completed the tow.

'The vessel was safely tied up at about 1am, meaning our lads could get home and get a bit of sleep before starting their day jobs.

'The weather at this time of year can be unpredictable, with big afternoon sea breezes cutting up rough, so make sure you keep an eye on the weather, and make sure you go boating in conditions that are suitable for your vessel and skills. Stay safe out there.”
