A pregnant woman suffered a broken leg after a man drove a car through a crowd of people in Hamilton on Sunday night.

Detective Sergeant Will Loughrin says police are interviewing victims, witnesses and offenders following the incident, which took place outside a property on Crawshaw Drive, Nawton, at about 9.50pm.

While inquiries are in their initial stages, Will says it appears three people were travelling in a black Subaru Impreza, which pulled over to allow a person to get out of the car and be sick on the roadside.

'Occupants of a nearby address have drawn exception at this and an altercation developed where the person being sick was assaulted.

'The female driver got out of the car to intervene and it appears another occupant of the car has then driven the Subaru through the crowd, striking several people.”

As a result of this, six people were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with four being admitted, including a pregnant woman who suffered a broken leg and another woman who suffered a broken foot.

The initial assault victim lost a number of teeth in the attack and was among those admitted to hospital.

'At this point we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened who hasn't already spoken to investigators to contact Hamilton Police.”

An 18-year-old disqualified driver was processed for excess breath alcohol shortly after the incident.

While the 17-year-old woman, who was originally driving the car, is also being processed for excess breath alcohol.

Will says further charges are likely.
