Tauranga third at cricket champs

A true captain's knock from Tauranga's Nensi Patel has seen Tauranga Intermediate place third at this year's New Zealand Cricket Primary Schools Girls' Championship.

Representing Northern Districts, Tauranga Intermediate saved their best match for the last day blasting and impressive 210/4 in 20 overs against their Arrowtown Primary School, with Nensi striking a beautiful and powerful 145 not out.

The Western Bay School skipper was in sublime touch with the bat, hammering her big three figure score off just 70 balls, with 100 runs coming in boundaries.

However the captain received plenty of assistance combining with Jade Harris (12) for an opening stand of 65 then adding another 83 run partnership with Sophia Rose (18).

While Arrowtown made a determined chase, the massive Tauranga Intermediate target proved too much, with the Otago representatives restricted to 101/6.

The Bay of Plenty side's bowlers limited their opponent's attempts to hit out, with five Tauranga bowlers taking a wicket apiece.

Three wins from five games, saw the ND representatives finish third at the championship. The star of the tournament was Nensi who received the tournament Most Valuable Player award.

Nensi blasted 343 runs during the tournament, which was nearly 150 runs more than the second highest batting total.

What made the feat even more remarkable, was she was dismissed without scoring, in Tauranga Intermediate's first game. To add to the accolades Nensi finished third on the most wickets tally with nine bowling scalps.

On day one, Tauranga posted a win and a loss defeating Raroa Intermediate and losing to eventual tournament winners Heaton Normal Intermediate.

Individual Tauranga Intermediate honours were Sophia Rose top scoring with 26 runs and Nensi Patel (3/8) Emily Pilbrow (3/15) Sophia Rose (2/9) with the ball against Raroa. Nensi Patel top scored with 32 in the Heaton Normal match-up.

Day two resulted in another win and a loss. Nensi Patel blasted an unbeaten 107, with Jade Harris posting 28 runs against Havelock North.

Bowling honours belonged to Nensi Patel (3/12) Paris Robertson (2/8) Emma Bettelheim (2/16). The Tauranga skipper top scored with 59 and took two wickets in the afternoon loss to Belmont Intermediate.
