Marching for a better future

People are calling for a change in the Government's policies to help reduce carbon emissions and make sure there is a decent future for younger generations.

In a global movement, people gathered to protest against climate change and show their respective governments that they want something to change.

'We're part of a global event to tell leaders that we are very serious about needing an effective decision in Paris next week,” says Carbon Reduction Group coordinator Gray Southon in Tauranga today.

'People all around the world are marching. I heard there is about 60,000 people marching in Auckland and we have 400 here.”

Gray says these are all people who are concerned and want to make sure there is a future for young people.

'We need a future temperature of under two degrees, countries all around the world have made a commitment which accounts for about three degrees, so we need a stronger commitment.

'The process has been very, very slow because most countries are faced with people who really don't want to make a change. People are becoming increasingly aware of the need for change and the need for national leadership.”

Gray says people can do lots of things on the ground, but national backing is needed to make a real change.

'It's like fighting a war, we don't fight a wall separately, we fight as a nation. We need that same leadership from our politicians. To make this effective.”

People are being encouraged to find ways of living more efficiently.

'Not to consume as much or travel as much,” say Gray. 'We need the systems and businesses need the framework to work to as well.”

There were about 300 people present today asking for bigger commitments to cutting carbon emissions at the Paris talks these next 2 weeks. The public is getting fed up with the excuses and weak commitments by world leaders (and NZ in particular). This is global people's message: we demand more effective climate action.

Fantastic turnout!

Let's hope that the government hears the call - but with this heads-in-the-sand government, I'm not holding my breath!

All of the hot air

Posted on 28-11-2015 19:50 | By How about this view!

generated by these marchers won't be helping. I can agree with the sentiment, HOWEVER, with India increasing it's use and production of coal and the increase in industrialisation in China and other third world countries, what results will we get from Mum and Dad out for a stroll in NZ. In my opinion, this is nothing more than a political march organised by the opposition parties and their rent-a-mob hangers on. Throw as much of our taxes at this as you think we will stomach, but what will be gained?? This is nonsense from whichever angle you wish to look at it and more money from taxes will make NO difference!

Get some facts guys

It's a big con that mankind is causing climate change. The planet has had higher carbon levels many times in its past, even before the industrial revolution. The Sun is the main culprit and most scientists are now in agreement on this. Fact, Temperatures have not increased for about 15 years now and many respected scientists are predicting a cooling period for 25 to 30 years. Even NASA has admitted that the antarctic ice is increasing. According to Al Gore New York was to be submerged by rising water levels and the Arctic ice cap would be gone by 2014. That didn't happen either. Oh, the emperor sure has new clothes in many eyes. Sure, many scientists 30,000 or so say it is happening but how many people know that far more than that say it is not.

Part of the problem

I knew this would bring out the deniers! @By iknow: you make some extraordinary statements there! Most scientists are in agreement that GW is not only happening but there is an increasing degree of certainty that humans are causing it. 2014 was the hottest year on record and indications are that 2015 will oust it as the hottest year on record. YOU might feel smug and comfortable ignoring the best science we have but are you really prepared to gamble the future of life on this planet (humans and other species) on that gamble? I and many others are not. I would like to leave a habitable planet behind for future generations and other life we share the planet with. I will continue to demand action by leaders of govt and industry to do more about carbon emissions. I'm not prepared to do nothing.

On second thoughts

having given it more thought, iknow does seem to know a lot. Great. I assume he knows better than all the 2000-odd IPCC scientists. Good! I believe you iknow. I'll give up trying to reduce my carbon emissions; I'll stop trying to get the govt to do more to reduce NZ's contribution to GW and Climate Change. And I'll buy a bigger car and stop cycling and walking. And what a pity I wasted all that money on our rooftop solar panels. The world is safe after all. Relax everyone. Chill.

Sorry but

No one is saying that we should not take action to clean up our backyard. Everyone agrees that climate change is happening, the disagreement is about why it is happening. Especially when it has been occurring since long before mankind even appeared on the planet. Even the weather watch man in this great publication, has published temperature graphs that show no significant changes in the last 100 years or so. The tone of your letter hints that you are a person that accepts the word of so called experts as gospel and do not think for yourself. To anyone reading this I suggest that you google "global cooling" and check for yourselves.
