It may not look like it when you look out the windows today, but the MetService is once again forecasting heavy rain for the Bay of Plenty.

A severe weather watch has been issued for the Bay, with a chance of heavy rain later on today.

An active front is moving up from the South Island today and is expected to reach central New Zealand tonight, before continuing to move north-eastwards over the North Island during Saturday.

'This front is preceded by very strong and moist north-westerlies, and severe weather warnings for heavy rain and severe north-west gales are in place for many areas,” says a statement from the MetService.

'The watch is for the likelihood that rainfall accumulations could reach warning criteria.”

Heavy rain is likely to hit, particularly around the Eastern Bay of Plenty Ranges, from Saturday morning until Saturday night.

'People are advised to stay up-to-date with forecasts,” they add, 'as parts of this watch may be upgraded to a warning and further areas may be added.”
