Bay man's epic journey raises $10,000

Running the equivalent of two marathons a day for two weeks may have worn out a pair of Jamie Milne's running shoes, but it hasn't worn out the Bay of Plenty man's determination to continue raising money.

Jamie completed a 960km run for his ‘Many Miles for Mary' campaign yesterday, racking up the impressive total in just a fortnight.

Yet this morning, the Rotorua man who now resides in Australia, got up, has his usual breakfast and plans to be back at work in his Warana gym on Monday.

Although exhausted, Jamie says he is pleased to have completed the journey which saw him stop at one stage to help out at with motor vehicle crash.

'I'm pretty tender bro,” he admits. 'My feet are a mess right now. I'm taking a couple of days to rest in Hobart before I head back to work.”

Jamie's solo run around Tasmania raised around $10,000 for Ronald McDonald House in Hobart.

Each year his ‘Many Miles for Mary' campaign looks to raise money for worthwhile causes. He completed the journey in a pair of Inov8 minimalist shoes, which he describes as 'pretty warn out”.

The ultra-long distance athlete says the campaign already has something big in store for September next year, and will raise funds for a worthwhile charity in his home town of Rotorua.

'My next challenge is to run from Portugal to Turkey in Europe,” he explains. 'West-to-East, across six countries. Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Serbia, Turkey. It means six different languages to learn.”

Jamie started ‘Many Miles for Mary' in honour of his grandmother Mary, who raised him. She played a pivotal role in his life, he says.

The Ngati Pikiao descendant describes her as a 'relentlessly warm and loving lady,” Mary's health tragically declined over the 10 years prior to her death with the onset of Alzheimers.
