Fallen tree clean-up underway

Detours are in place in Te Puke after a tree fell on a car this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council contractors are on site and the detours are to allow contractors to remove the tree and clear the site.

These will be in place until at least mid-afternoon today.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion told SunLive this morning that both eastbound lanes of the main road through Te Puke were blocked as a result of the fallen tree. Read more here.

'A detour for west-bound traffic through Te Puke is at Oxford/Queen/Jocelyn streets,” says the Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

'Contractors may have to stop traffic heading east-bound if necessary for a short time.”

Motorists are warned they may experience delays – however contractors anticipate the road will be fully open again before peak traffic begins.

Very lucky no one was seriously injured. By the looks of the photos the "old" tree looks rotten!! It's a wonder this hasn't happen more often with some of these trees showing signs of age and damage from passing trucks (was this the reason it came down). There was no wind at the time!! Regular inspections maybe needed in the future or am I "barking" up the wrong tree. . . .
