Ohauiti murder case continues

The woman at the centre of the Ohauiti murder trial told how she was followed by two men from a party where she had been dumped by her boyfriend and spurned by his relatives and friends.

Hiakita Hori Eruera, Hyacin Eruera and Paul William Taki are currently on trial in Tauranga for the murder of 19-year-old Takena Tiepa-Ranapia, also known as Tarks, on November 30, 2014.

Crown Prosecutor Greg Hollister Jones says while Hiakita Eruera is alleged to have struck the fatal blow with a knife to the throat of victim, his wife Hyacin and friend Paul Taki were fully involved participants.

The Crown alleges 19-year-old Takena Tiepa-Ranapia was stabbed at 4b Mansfield Street. Picture: Google Maps.

As well as denying murder, they also deny assaulting two other men from the party found near the corner of Ohauiti Road and Welcome Bay Road. One man was repeatedly stabbed, while the other was struck on the back of the head with a metal object.

Paris Taite is the daughter of Hyacin Eruera and the stepdaughter of Hiakita Eruera.

Under cross examination by Hiakita's lawyer, Russell Fairbrother QC, Paris recalled a night made memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Paris admitted she had drank most of a bottle of vodka and some bourbon on the night, as well as smoking cannabis.

With the relationship with her former boyfriend and the father of her child severed, Paris explained how the people she thought would offer her sympathy and support turned against her.

There were arguments on the evening of November 30, 2014, accompanied by a ‘shoving fight' with Tarks, which allegedly resulted in Paris being pushed down a stairway.

When she left the party, the 21-year-old alleges she was followed by two men whom she feared were going to rape her. By this stage it was after 10pm, with Paris on a bracelet and a court curfew of 7pm.

She says the reason she appeared distraught in an in-taxi video captured later that evening was because of the two people following her along Ohauiti Road. She says they were about 100m behind her and whistled at her.

The red t-shirt she was wearing on the night was originally intended as a gift for her former boyfriend – a patched member of the Mongrel Mob Porirua chapter and brother of the dead man, Tarks.

Her stepfather is a patched member of the notorious chapter, while Tarks was associated with the Mongrel Mob.

The Crown's assertion is when Paris arrived at the Erueras' Eversham Road home and explained why she was so upset, the accused drove to Ohauiti to confront the men and take retribution.

The High Court jury trial, with Justice Christian Whata presiding, continues.
