City walkway plans shelved

Tauranga City Council have this afternoon confirmed that plans for a new walkway/cycleway from Memorial Park to The Strand have been deferred.

According to a council spokesperson, the reasoning behind the decision is "in light of other city projects taking priority".

Council had resolved to allocate $30,000 for an investigation into the project earlier this year .

The investigation was to inform a review of the walkway concept that would be considered as part of the 2016/17 annual plan.

However, elected members today voted to defer the funding.

The decision is on the basis that an investigation into the walkway/cycleway was "not a high priority for the city when balanced against other current projects".

Council have now recommended that the subject should be included for consideration through the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan process.

So buying a boat lift for business is a higher priority than providing an amenity a great deal of ratepayers would use?

What a pack of pussies. They talk about spending more money on the waterfront and access thereto and renege on an opportunity like this. It seems the $10 Tauranga mentality is still alive and kicking in the fastest growing region.

Obviously it has been shelved

They have their sights set on a museum once again. The thin end of the wedge, mark my words, once it is forced onto ratepayers it will be decided that it's not large enough to house the full collection and extensions or larger purpose built facilities will be needed. As a well known personality is fond of saying..... "Inch by Inch!"

Incompetance at best

$1 million in rates money was spend on tis project which came with a price tag in the region of $12 million for 990 meters on marine environment destroying walkway. All of this to avoid a walk/cycle up a few meters of Devonport Road. The reports are all on file and this lot allocate $30,000 to spend on more consultants reports! Go figure? Now they put it to one side. no doubt to focus on their new Museum and Stadium on the Domain!

so pray tell...

are the other projects taking precedence?!!!, it would not be anything to do with improving our cities basic infrastructure that is for sure, after spending the last 2 weeks in the Brisbane CBD, our amenities and walkways are 3rd world!!!, and then there is the "waterfront" development????.

Good decision almost, "defer" means that it will come back again and again for the same same ...

The neighbours don't want it

But that's nothing new eh Murray? You rightly point out up to a $million wasted. But those with long memories remember all that money going to buy a Speedway and the millions into Baypark. That's without even factoring in the environment polluting car races and the destruction of the wetland. Does your environmental concern stretch to those too?
