Police called to port

Emergency services have been called to the Port of Tauranga after an incident on board a ship. It is understood a fight occurred.

A witness told SunLive a number of police and ambulances gathered at the intersection of Totara Street and Hull Road at 5.15pm this afternoon.

Port of Tauranga has confirmed 'there was an issue” aboard the Greek-owned and Panamanian flagged bulk carrier Lancelot V at the port.

However, they could not confirm what had happened on board.

It is understood the ship has been detained in Tauranga for several months due to outstanding money matters unrelated to this incident.

Previously, the crew of 18, mainly Russian, Ukrainian and Filipino had to remain on board the ship for several months because their visas had expired. But now the men are free to go ashore.

More details to follow as they come to hand.
