Community hub offer at Historic Village

Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT) is proposing to build a community hub at the Tauranga Historic Village.

The concept involves housing community organisations in a centralised fit-for-purpose administration facility.

TECT is proposing to buy land within the Village from Tauranga City Council, where it will build and partly develop some adjoining green space for communal Village use.

The intention is for the community hub to be managed by a separate trust, says TECT General Manager Wayne Werder.

'We have had strong feedback from community groups that they would see value in a hub,” says Wayne.

'As part of our planning, we have investigated a number of potential sites. The Historic Village is one of these and we are particularly interested in the potential for synergies with the wider Historic Village site.

'In many ways the Village is a natural fit for this initiative.

'TECT wants to create an environment that increases the capability and effectiveness of community organisations through better collaboration, communication and sharing of best practice.”

The hub will provide flexible spaces suitable for the organisations it houses, support from wrap-around services such as business advice and marketing, and opportunities for community organisations to collaborate with others.

In support of the TECT proposal, Mayor Stuart Crosby says: 'The Historic Village is home to a diverse range of community and commercial entities.

'It is a unique, multi-dimensional location that fulfils an important role in Tauranga.

'If the proposal goes ahead at the Village it would complement existing Village community facilities and activities.

'Regardless of where it is located, the community hub will contribute so much to the wider community.

'It would provide an opportunity to foster and help develop smaller organisations, supporting and facilitating their sustainability.”

The report on the community hub will be considered by council this Wednesday (November 25).

Community feedback will be called for before a decision is made early next year.

Ummm Overit, there were already many Community Organisations at the village. Great idea if they are going to house them in one building and turn the rest into a working museum

Great Concept-

what a great idea to develop this area in that manner- well done TECT - hope the underground springs can be dealt with - and also how about getting NZTA to put in a link to Route K at the same time-???

This is another 'out of left field' initiative that just doesn't smell right. Many in the community support the enhancement of the Historic Village Museum and it's no coincidence that this approach by TECT should arrive at the same time as Council advise they plan a new museum in the Civic Centre. I have NEVER heard of TECT being the 'champion', initiator of a community project which begs the question, "Where did this come from?" TECT are about the provision of funding support in response to approaches made to them. The land opposite the Historic Village would make far more sense as a purchase and develop option by TECT, especially so if TECT purchased enough land to provide off street parking for their needs and extras desperately need for the Village. First and foremost, this is the Historic Village Museum which should be enhanced, NOT further undermined!
