Girven Road housing proposal

Tauranga City Council is inviting responses to a proposal for a site on Girven Road to be considered for special housing.

The site, known as Golden Grove Kiwi Holiday Park, is currently zoned for residential development.

In August 2014, the Tauranga Housing Accord was signed by Tauranga City Council and government to help address housing issues in the city.

'One of the ways this will be done is by identifying specific sites in the city that are deemed suitable for new housing – these are called Special Housing Areas,” says a statement from council.

'Developments do not need to be for low-cost housing, affordable housing or social housing in order to be progressed through a Special Housing Area.”

The proposed development at Girven Road is expected to consist of approximately 66 two-and-three level townhouses and apartments, as well as a café and a childcare facility.

The developer anticipates that prices would start from $400,000.

Details of the developer's proposal can be found here, along with information about how you can give your feedback.

Responses must be received by 5pm Friday 18 December 2015. Council says: 'Community views will help inform our decision whether or not to agree to the request from the developer and recommend this development as a Special Housing Area to the Minister of Housing.

'Decisions regarding this proposal will be made at a subsequent council meeting.”

This process to circumvent City Plan requirements, meaningful community consultation, to pander to developers and enhance their profits and power base of selected officials has GOT TO STOP. The legislation as I understood it was NOT intended for this purpose, having, as it's primary objective, better outcomes for 'first home buyers' with an emphasis on cost reduction, NOT profit and ego enhancing!

What on earth is wrong with you people? Why can't it stay as a holiday park? They are all disappearing for Greedy Councils to reap in the rewards! Some people actually live here and call it their home already, others like to camp there and enjoy family time. Why the heck change something that already accomodates housing for those that live there already???

More rubbish......

....... From council and developers. Last time all this came up the developers said it would help them build more affordable (starting at 300k) houses, and enable them to build them more quickly. Papamoa still has none despite all the effort and there appears to be only two built in Waihi Rd so far. Maybe the council should stop developers promising the earth and delivering nothing. Grab the bull by the horns TCC, you could do this easily yourself. It would be. An amazing community project, and would give all the staff at your offices something to do. Or are you going to cave to developers again. Still waiting for the affordable homes.

At least it will be in keeping with the general tone of that Arataki area. It is a pity about the demise of the camping ground though - some would say that is the price of progress!
