Bad weather prompts road warning

Impending bad weather in the Bay of Plenty has prompted a warning from police for motorists to drive with extreme care this weekend.

A weather watch for heavy rain and strong winds has been issued by the MetService, with rain expected to pick up tonight and possible heavy falls throughout Saturday.

Rainfall amounts could approach warning criteria during Saturday (70-to-100mm falling in 12-to-24 hours), particularly about the ranges in the Eastern Bay.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion is urging motorists to be extra cautious whilst out on the region's roads.

'Make sure you respect the following distances, knock some speed off and be careful at intersections,” says Ian.

'Also bear in mind that the weather activated speed variable limits over the Kaimai Range on State Highway 29 may very well be activated if there are adverse weather conditions.”

Ian says the indicated speed on the signs for the Tauranga side is 80km/h and for the Waikato side is 60km/h.

'When those speed signs are activated, that is the speed limit,” he confirms.

'There seems to be some suggestion that some drivers believe it to be an advisory speed limit. This is not the case.

'Drivers exceeding the posted speed limit can expect to be issued with an infringement notice.”

I drove over this stretch of road yesterday. It was spitting in one small patch but the relevant people had activated the signs and it was indeed 80km/h on the Tauranga side and 60km/h on the Waikato side. Completely needless and an unnecessary delay. But it's the only way these controlling people can envisage road safety.

Kiwi drivers are terrible. Just look at all the holes thru the fecing on the Waikato side. Whole sections mowed down. Seems we have to penalise everyone to save the idiots.
