Do you drive distraction free?

You're a responsible driver who sticks to the speed limit, doesn't drink and drive, wears a seatbelt and keeps your vehicle in good order. But how many can honestly say they've never allowed themselves to get distracted whilst driving?

'The reality is that a single moment of distraction, even by a responsible driver, makes you less likely to anticipate hazards and puts you, your passengers and other road users at risk of serious injury and death,” says a statement from police.

'Mobile phones, food and drink, smoking, loose animals and objects, restless children, music, GPS gadgets and even talking to passengers are common distractions.”

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says over the last few years there has been an increase in the distraction causation factor in crashes, and it seems to be more prevalent.

'By in large, these are normal law abiding citizens who make a small mistake,” says Ian, 'but that small mistake can end in tragedy.

'Even though it may only be a second's distraction, not quite paying the right attention at intersections can translate, particularly in 100km/h areas or areas greater than 70km/h, to very serious injury or worse.”

Ian says distractions make drivers less likely to anticipate hazards and puts people both directly and indirectly at risk.

The NZ Transport Agency has developed a short animated video about the dangers of driving distractions.

Police say it contains some food for thought and is worth watching.

'As we head in to a particularly busy time on our roads, we will be highlighting a variety of road risks and advice, and we encourage you to join in the discussion and share your own experiences.

'Raising awareness can help save lives and ensure we all get to enjoy this summer with our families and friends.”
