City waterfront plan revealed

Public feedback is being sought on a council proposal to spend around $3 million on tidal stairs, a new pier and a pontoon for the city's waterfront.

The project is developed in parallel with the Tauranga City Centre Spatial Framework, described as 'the reconnection with water and access to the water”.

'We know from extensive community and stakeholder engagement that people want to be able to access the water on The Waterfront,” says mayor Stuart Crosby, 'be it to dip their toes in, kayak, pull up a rowing boat or paddleboard.

'We will continue the conversation on Facebook and through our council channels to get feedback on ‘how will this first stage of access to water work for you?' before we go to the detailed design stage.”

The facilities are proposed to be built on the waterfront area in front of Masonic Park.

The council will also continue to involve local water user groups, such as rowing clubs and waka ama, and local iwi, throughout the consultation process.

Council's 2015-2025 Long Term Plan allocated $8 million to be spent in the next five years on city centre and waterfront development and improving the streetscape, waterfront and open spaces in the heart of the city.

The indicative cost for building the proposed tidal stairs, Masonic pier and pontoon ranges from $2.6 to $3.2 million.

The costs will be refined once the concept is confirmed and the detailed design is carried out.

If the form and function of the concept is confirmed through community feedback and elected member review, council will then complete detailed design with the aim to have the work ready for summer 2016/17.

Good idea, would love the pier and pontoon

Small problem

Well actually a large one made of two steel rails. Yep there is a rail line going right through the middle of all this having train rumbling through does disturb the peace while you dangle your toes in the water and 3.2 million yeah right.

Looks good but....

How will it look when its covered in smelly sea lettuce? Maybe spend a bit more money on researching how to stop it blooming in our harbor.

Now were talking, and when it goes ahead just make sure the height of the buildings is not so high as to block the afternoon sun over the whole area out to the waters edge where the steps down to the water are to be. If it is this would defeat the purpose and make the area cold in late afternoon evening when it should be bathed in the evening afterglow of sunset. Be great for having coffee in morning before toddling off to work and good spot for kids to try their hand at a bit of fishing or bait catching. To few a place like this now around the town and over Mount. Step would be great for end of pilot bay road where wharf was until some dork from council buggered it up. Bet he lived in Tauranga and had it in for Mounties.

I wanna go there?

Is this going to attract me there? No. It is a waste of money as the slide of the CBD is irreversible due to many combining reasons. I have no answers for this, but this is a bandaid on a much bigger wound.

Great idea

Lets get it built. I see the usual negative nellies are out in force as usual. I wish you guys would go and live somewhere else - i believe there are lots of empty houses in the middle east.

Forget the stairs

go with the pier and pontoon. Pretty picture doesn't show a low tide at the bottom of stairs! Not a toe dipping spot, that's for sure.

We'll be little Varanasi! Smile. You can bet that the final cost will at least double!

Safety

Of course the law will require it to be fenced!! Or will they have a lifeguard on hand 24/7 ?

Wouldn't it be great to have multiple piers coming off our Waterfront with Retail shops & Restaurants on them. It would rejuvenate down town Tauranga as a hub for people & visitors to come & experience. This could be funded by Developers & underwritten by Council but creating a space that attracts people to come and use. In Florida or Australia they use their waterfronts for this already so its not as though we are re-inventing the wheel. By moving retail onto the waterfront TCC can work with Landlords & Developers to knock down the old buildings in town & create big new office space attracting big businesses to TGA. By having more Big Businesses it means more people, more jobs across all sectors, new homes & more Retail spending.

Why is the council spending money when it's in debt? I'm sure they paid a nice sum for the designs to be made up also...too late in my opinion, the council decide things before they go out for public support hence why locals never feel listened to. Yeah sure they hold meetings to 'discuss' issues. Put the rates up again will be already on the agenda. Like the younger sibling to Auckland we will be forever compared to. Spend money to make money...that logic is missing!

Good for Tauranga

Looks great, lets hope something like this goes ahead.

my car

Posted on 14-11-2015 16:20 | By dave4u

Where do I park it to get there or will there be ferrys and ferry terminals around the harbour close to big parks I can leave my car at and catch a ferry will it have a jetpak landing pad for future proofing it?

I agree with fernhill 6 overseas citys have used their waterfronts well with cafes and restaurants/bars and a variety of shops hope someone in council takes note of these good suggestions

As a kid....

Posted on 15-11-2015 09:58 | By Smilarkie

.... I would bike down to the wharf and fish. They had stairs that went into the water so boats could load in all tides. The problem is that they get very slipery, and the then council closed these off, and later demolished the lot. TCC you have no vision, you continually spend hundreds of thousands on idiots to come up with stupid ideas that dont work. 20yrs ago I had the privliage of looking through a 2" thick document of the plan for the whole water front. That would have cost tens of thousands (even then) and none of what I saw then has been done. Have some vision. Wharfs, great, cafes, bars, shops, great. Put the railway line in a tunnel underground and no stupid slippery stairs. Bring back the smaller fishing boats to the CBD, stop building shopping centers out of town and life will return.

Other places too

Why doesn't someone come up with this idea in Katikati. We have a beautiful river but only a few get to enjoy it.

Train Tracks

Posted on 15-11-2015 18:00 | By Fernhill 6

People seem to have a issue with the Trains running along the Strand and that it will impact the development of the Waterfront. Rather than look at the negatives look at the positives that the line could be used to bring people to down town Tauranga. The line runs all the way through to Katikati in one direction and across to Matapihi & the Mount in the other direction. We could have designated Park & Ride Stations along the way so that we get a Public transport system working and people out of their cars and commuting to Tauranga by Train. Visitors from the Cruise ships could catch a train across to Tauranga to enjoy the Waterfront Development as well as families at weekends.

Great plan, a few minor hitches: no passenger wagons, NZ public love their cars and little hope that will get out until right outside the door, busiest lines in NZ already. Prime use is cargo. get around all that and it is a great idea.

Vision

Posted on 16-11-2015 16:58 | By Fernhill 6

If you've got a vision & a plan of where things will be in 5 years time then anything is achieveable. A few Freight trains didn't stop any other major city in the world from having commuter trains as well. Auckland & Wellington manage to do it so why can't Tauranga given that we are one of the fastest growing cities in NZ. Let's have a Waterfront that is buzzing with people & a place where people want to come to visit just like the Mount.

Some constructive ideas

Posted on 17-11-2015 19:59 | By peecee09

The concept has a lot of merit if done properly.I would respectfully suggest the following ideas. 1. Plan for a good water supply to keep steps clean and not slippery. 2. Make sure the pier is set up to allow for fishing (one of NZs favourite pastimes) by providing taps and general fishing conducive design in the construction. 3. Investigate the feasibility of providing some type of shading. 4. Ensure that regular cleaning is catered for in the ongoing maintenance of the structure.h

i like your ideas, both posting sounds as if you have your head screwed on, stand for council next time? Good idea for Council to build some retail space (thats not in willow street to rent while landlords bulldoze stuffed buildings to help reinvent CBD

Have you not noticed the fleet of empty buses that roam the city streets? Are you wanting to add a fleet of empty passenger trains to that fleet?

Kenworthlogger

Posted on 24-11-2015 12:48 | By Plonker

Like many things the empty buses are a clear symbol of why Councils should not be allowed to think, have money and spend. The simple thing is "less is better". The trains will be as well occupied as the buses. The worry is that they would want tinted windows in the trains like the buses so as to hide just how few are in there.

Yes you are totally right Plonker

Posted on 25-11-2015 16:32 | By Kenworthlogger

If there was a need for buses trains etc private enterprise would provide them. Private companies would do this if there was a demand but clearly council are not as clever and continue to pour millions into unused busses..

Yes totally correct, they create these things simply to create self justification to exist.

Parking

Where are the people to visit here going to Park?

@ DAD

parking, yes indeed a good question, the nearest parking left is at the shopping malls. Its free also.

Miserable!

Posted on 02-12-2015 17:05 | By simon_beaton

Reading the comments is quite depressing, what a miserable lot most of you are. Get a life, have so fun! Thank you TCC for some vision (at last) Oh but wait, what about parking??? I know, let's build a multi-storey one on the land instead.

Build a car park building, borrow $29 million to do it. lucky days ratepayers, in more debt again and no escape.

Smokescreen?

Posted on 04-12-2015 13:53 | By So

Is this maybe a smokescreen to divert attention to the new council building/s they want to build, along with who is going to pay for all this?

What a joke it all is

Posted on 05-12-2015 13:12 | By Crash test dummies

The water way in front of this area is certainly not suitable for water activities, including fishing. The main problem is the huge volume of sea lettuce that drifts in and out on the tides constantly. The current is strong also. The steps will become slimy and covered in rotting sea lettuce, unless the harbour is cleaned up first there is little hope of this being a safe place at all.
