Cleaning up Mount Maunganui’s beaches is the main focus of a volunteer environmental group on Saturday.

Sustainable Coastlines is a volunteer project based in Auckland focused on travelling around New Zealand and educating residents and visitors about keeping New Zealand beaches clean.

Co-founder Sam Judd and volunteers clean up around Mechanics Bay in  Auckland last year.

The organisation is running a ‘call to action’ for volunteers to come down on February 19 and clean up Mount Maunganui beaches in conjunction with the Hyundai Long board tour.

Co-founder Sam Judd says all the rubbish collected will be audited to provide information for their winter educational tour.

“We audit the rubbish into different categories and so when we travel on our road show, we bring figures and information regarding rubbish in the Bay of Plenty area for the time that we studied to educate people about how important it is to keep the beaches clean.”

Sam says he is “pleased to be able to come to this area, as this is the first time we have come down here”.

“We have been contacted by local people in the area to say there is a lot of rubbish in the harbour, so it will be a challenge in the BOP area. The scale of the rubbish, we will find out on the day.”

Volunteers are to meet at the Sustainable Coastlines tent in the surfing competition area at midday on February 19.

Sam says all equipment is supplied and there are great prizes on offer for those involved.
