SPCA call for firework ban

The SPCA are hoping to avoid unnecessary fear, injury and disruption to pets this Guy Fawkes, and are urging people not to buy fireworks to mark the occasion.

SPCA New Zealand CEO Ric Odom says the public are well aware that private fireworks are a danger to both people and animals.

Calls for a ban on public sales have still not been met despite a Change.org petition attracting more than 32,000 signatures.

'Fireworks are traumatic for animals,” says Ric. 'The loud, unexpected bangs are distressing for many animals. It can cause them to run away, creating more safety issues for people and animals.

'The short sale period for private use fireworks doesn't stop people lighting fireworks for months after Guy Fawkes. People with pets have to be alert to the danger far beyond November 5.

'There is only one solution in the SPCA's eyes, and that is to ban firework sales to individuals and allow people to enjoy controlled public displays only.”

Research shows that when exposed to fireworks, animals routinely displayed fearful behaviour including trembling, escaping, urination or defecation, vocalisation and destructive behaviour.

The SPCA still hopes a ban on public sales is not far away, but until then the organisation has these tips to help animal owners keep their pets safe throughout fireworks season:

1) Stay home with your pet - they will be less stressed with someone they trust close by.

2) Keep them indoors - they won't see the flashes and the bangs will be muffled. Close doors and windows and draw the curtains. Turn up the volume on your radio or TV to help drown out loud bangs with familiar sounds.

3) Put a collar and registration tag on your dog - if your dog panics and runs away, it will help rescuers reunite you. Attach a disc with your phone number. Have your pet microchipped in case they do escape.

4) Comfort your pet - this could mean cuddling them if it helps or giving them space, depending on what your pet needs. Take special care of elderly or nervous pets and if your pet is very stressed consult your vet for advice on keeping them calm.

5) Move horses and farm animals away from fireworks - and make sure all fences are secure. Stable horses where possible.

6) Never punish your pets when they are scared - this will only make their fear and stress levels worse.

Guy Fawkes week coincides with the SPCA Annual Appeal, which runs between Monday, November 2, and Sunday, November 8.

If you would like to support the work of the SPCA, donations can be made to street collectors around the country from today until 8 November, at any ASB branch or online via: www.spcaannualappeal.org.nz

Ban?

Crazy, just deal with the few idiots who are irresponsible about it all.

Already the fireworks were going off in the park by my place last night. This will continue for months, usually in the early hours of the morning. I do not know why the Government's excuse for banning private sales was that it would be too hard to Police. What would there be to police if private individual sales were banned? Stick with organised public displays. It will take a major occurrence, unfortunately, to bring a halt to this.

Idiots??

Posted on 03-11-2015 12:38 | By Kevin85

I have seen quite a few fires caused by fireworks over the years. Mostly due to fireworks landing in gutters, especially with the buzzy bee ones. As to the animal problem, my cat loves watching fireworks but the new born does not especially at 2am.

No Brainer

Australia dealt with this years ago!! What backward country celebrates a political failure 450 years ago??!! Stop the damage! Ban these things now!!!

we came home from the movies last night and our poor rabbit was going crazy in his hutch running around and shaking. they need to be banned. if fireworks were banned there would be nothing to police as there just wouldn't be any in the country. i think it is just a money maker for the government in taxes

Ban this crazy practice

Posted on 03-11-2015 13:21 | By Barry Langford

Plonker? How on earth are you going to deal with the few idiots who are responsible about it all? Ban the entire programme and sales of these dangerous items. There has not been one politician with the ..... to stand up and ban this practice. The whole situation makes me very angry. Come on New Zealand, grow up a little bit more!

Money spinner for the Government

Posted on 03-11-2015 15:03 | By The Sage

The only possible reason I can think of, that this practice has not been banned, is that it is a good money spinner for the Government. I can't believe after all the submissions and signatures that were raised that they didn't change the law. Australia changed theirs years ago.

Get rid of the scourge

Banning fireworks, and hence policing the problem, is simple; - Just prohibit sales to the public. Either that, or just reclassify fireworks as an explosive. Then only licensed people can possess or use them. We have public displays now (yawn), so private fireworks are redundant anyway

It's just an excuse for ignorant idiots to disturb other people.

Please run an opinion poll on the subject and send a copy of the results to parliament

Banning them

Posted on 04-11-2015 01:33 | By GreertonBoy

Doesn't work, it just makes them harder to buy and more expensive. Last time I was in Australia, there was still fireworks going off. I was there one 'Queens Birthday' weekend and there were fireworks all over the place. It just gives the 'black market' another commodity to smuggle and makes kids want them more.(increases the market) Better would be if pet owners could keep their pets inside and if people letting them off were given access to places away from populated areas... like parks on the fringes of towns with few/no houses nearby. Kids letting them off in parks in town at 3am is pathetic and disgraceful...they think it is funny.... but they will grow up one day and other brats will prolly do it near them.... it is a funny world... but not 'funny ha ha' type of funny

fools will always be fools.

Posted on 04-11-2015 08:38 | By Konan Griffin

irresponsible fools will be irresponsible with or without fireworks. If you ban fireworks, they'll just find some other way to express their foolishness. Organised fireworks displays are ok.....(done by professionals)...but I don't agree with sales to the general public.

some dipstick

was letting off bangers in welcome bay at 5.30 this morning

BAN THEM

Posted on 04-11-2015 13:03 | By Kenworthlogger

Yes i fully agree with the SPCA they should have a ban on pets.

ban them?

Posted on 04-11-2015 14:37 | By Plonker

SPCA Muppets, they should stick to fixing cats and dogs. Seen more dead on the road, so to be fair I guess cars will be banned next right? Planes are a hazard to bird life, to ban them to, when it rains it is a hazard to ants nesting under eth cobblestones, so ban the rain. Where does the madness stop?

Agree with SPCA

Posted on 04-11-2015 15:56 | By Virginia49

there are too many accidents both animals and humans some people have no idea how to behave with them.

Yes ban!

Posted on 04-11-2015 16:47 | By Kenworthlogger

And while we are at it we should ban cars as there are too many accident and lots of deaths. Lots involving animals and humans.

Real Fireworks

Posted on 05-11-2015 09:32 | By Plonker

NZ should be bringing in the real stuff, overseas they have really good ones. We really need them. Would be a much better idea that cats and dogs are eliminated as a foreign pest that destroy the natural wildlife of NZ, the number of native birds that have and will be wiped out by cats if shocking. In doing that the need of the SPCA will also get deleted. Then we can all get back to the important things like fireworks.

Yes totally agree Plonker

Posted on 05-11-2015 15:02 | By Kenworthlogger

Yep im with you on this one Plonker. Ban cats and dogs. Then we could let off our fireworks anywhere. Everyone would be happy. It would be like Disneyland with fireworks lit everynight...

Disneyland

Posted on 06-11-2015 15:50 | By Plonker

Most excellent, then we don't need the SPCA either moaning about nothing also.

Moaning

Posted on 08-11-2015 02:42 | By Kenworthlogger

Yes nothing worse than people moaning..

Ban...

Posted on 08-11-2015 14:44 | By GreertonBoy

people that moan.... force them to let off some fireworks... it might actually get them to enjoy themselves... whilst banning stuff... better ban thunder as well... that upsets animals worse than fireworks probably.... can't have that!

Idiot Magnets

Posted on 08-11-2015 16:19 | By kellbell

Yes agree with SPCA ban the bloody things no private sales and only licenced public displays at approved sites on or about the specified day and at specific times from 8.30pm and before 10pm.Normal people liestock and domestic animals can do without this rubbish.

Excellent idea GreertonBoy

Posted on 08-11-2015 16:43 | By Kenworthlogger

We should make them actually have fun before they ban having fun. Once they ban having fun everybody will turn into moaners...

Overit

The loud bangs started last Monday night, the first day of sales, and still continue......

Posted on 09-11-2015 15:10 | By Plonker

That is a not a good idea, the usual suspects at Council will jump at the chance of running 20 events a year all coting a future to have someone light a match. just leave it to Jo-public to make their own choices.

@ Kenworthlogger

Posted on 09-11-2015 15:13 | By Plonker

Oh dear, sure to be banned if fun was a possibility, don't suggest that as a reason why not to ban it all. Just let the misfit SPCA keep on moaning and steadily but surely look more silly each day as they do as the "Fun-Police" self appointed moaners.

Loud bangs?

Posted on 09-11-2015 16:22 | By Plonker

Great, almost as loud as the Baypark Speedway, planes landing 24/7 at the airport. Boy racers motoring about.

Y'know what I hate...

Posted on 11-11-2015 13:32 | By GreertonBoy

Wowsers who think fireworks (in appropriate places at appropriate times) should be banned,or that helicopter is too noisy... we don't want it, those trucks are too noisy! That guy hammering nails next door is too loud etc.... but if a lion escapes from the zoo... they would be desperate for the police to hurry up and shoot it, if they or their loved ones are in a motor accident and need a helicopter ride to hospital... if their new golf clubs and stuff thy bought off trade me are on that truck? What gives? Then some loud bangs are acceptable suddenly? The noisy helicopter becomes a godsend, and people are waiting for those noisy trucks.... get over it... we live in a noisy world.... noise for the sake of it, or to annoy is bad of course, but we just have to accept some entertainment is noisy too...

go for the Buddys day out

Posted on 13-11-2015 21:26 | By kellbell

@Greerton Boy looks like you live close to Tauranga Hospital so you should book in and have the ringing in your ears caused by noise checked out as it is clearly affecting your balance and equilibrium.

Stop moaning

Posted on 16-11-2015 19:05 | By Kenworthlogger

Glad to see all the moaners have gotten overit now and have stopped moaning about the fun of fireworks. Yay!!

Overit

Posted on 26-11-2015 15:54 | By overit

Kenny on Guy Fawkes night once it got dark, seriously it was like being in a war here. The noise was incredible, I am sure animals would have been terrified. We live in Welcome Bay along a valley where these fireworks on some nights echo three times up/down the Valley. Some of these bangers are very loud. Amazingly this year people have been pretty good at being thoughtful with their fireworks unlike previous years. I am aware of 4 incidents since Nov. 5th where the clowns have let off their fireworks at very unsocial hours.

Agreed

Posted on 27-11-2015 12:00 | By jess101xox

Some people don't care about the danger for animals. All they care about is the enjoyment. Animals are running away from their homes and owners, leaving them devastated. The ban should be put in place to stop the animals running away. Humans are also traumatised about the fireworks. More should be done

Really?

Posted on 27-11-2015 22:51 | By Kenworthlogger

Overit, when i was in the army the noise from the 50 caliber browning was way more noisy than any fireworks, especially in a firefight. Jess101xox lightning and thunder are way more terrifying than fireworks. Do you want to ban thunder next? Maybe you guys need to drive trucks. By the end of the week you are so tired you will sleep thru anything...,

Overit

Its an archaic tradition-it doesnt even represent NZ history. Have you noticed how Halloween it taking off. Next it will be Thanksgiving, this talk of black Friday.

Cmon

Posted on 28-11-2015 14:17 | By Kenworthlogger

Who cares if it was for NZ day. Its a bit of fun and enjoyment one night of the year. Yes one night. Just thank your lucky stars your not a resident of Paris. They really have something to complain about. Now stop moaning and go out and enjoy life.

ban the horrible things

Posted on 29-11-2015 16:50 | By Tyraone

Fireworks are not let off for one night only they seem to go on and on. ban the things public organized displays I have no issues with at all

Go back to play with guns

Posted on 29-11-2015 20:19 | By stokey

What a macho plonker is kenworthless - oops. Ban fireworks except for organised events. Animals have rights and to argue that boys playing with their toys(firearms) is the same is psychophantic rubbish. Get real and grow up!

Stokey what is your point?

Posted on 30-11-2015 14:30 | By Kenworthlogger

Overit said it was like being in a war on Guy Fawkes night. Having been in the army i could assure you warfare is much louder. So not sure what rubbish you are talking about?
