Lights to replace Greerton roundabout

Tauranga City Council have confirmed that the Cameron Road/Chadwick Road roundabout in Greerton will be replaced with traffic lights next year.

The lights are part of general safety works planned to improve traffic flows and make the intersection safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Information about the project will be on display next week, from November 2-7, at Greerton Library.

The public are also invited to discuss the plans with council's transportation staff at the next Community Connections meeting on November 10 (7pm) at the Greerton RSA Club on Cameron Road.

'The roundabout has worked well for many years,” says council transportation manager Martin Parkes, 'but traffic conditions in that area are changing.

'Every intersection has different requirements for traffic and for the types of people who use it.

'Traffic lights are now the best option for this intersection. It will allow traffic to flow more smoothly through and around the area.”

It is hoped the lights will make the intersection much safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists, while new cycle lanes will also be added to the approaching streets as part of the safety improvements.

Other work will include replacing some of the trees that are lifting up the road surface and realigning some of the parking areas.

Construction will start in May 2016, with a finish date of October 2016.

Fix whats not broken instead

I cant believe the decisions that are being made around Tauranga at the moment and the idiotic ideas on traffic flows. Seriously I don't live in Greerton but find it a pleasure to visit and shop. To think I am going to have to sit in lines of traffic waiting for the lights to change doesn't appeal to me and not to mention the landscape that will change because of it. Greerton is a quaint little shopping centre leave it alone. Such nonsense the traffic flows better with lights. Also leave 9th Ave alone or we will have traffic banked up even further on Cameron Road and some very frustrated motorists. Fix the real problem areas like turret road, 15th ave.

Better access to the toll road might make Greerton safer, and GatePa and the hospital area safer too - if traffic lights are the answer, perhaps they need to be at Barkes Corner and the intersection of Chadwick and Oropi Rd as well

Bout time

This is a busy intersection and half the time it is take your life it your own hands. Thanks Council that is great news

What Is Time?

I seem to remember when a new part of road was to altered or reconstructed a few weeks saw us driving over it finished. What is the reason for the length of time taken? 18th Avenue by the hospital took ages to reconstruct with stupid closures etc. Time to bring back some old fsahioned roading engineers to say work now. The laying of the pipes under the road at the main entrance to the hospital was done quickly. Love some engineer to justify why so long.

Think again

Perhaps they should look at the pedestrian crossing that is holding up traffic. Light on the crossing would make life so much easier

So if this is the case......

Will the stupid pedestrian crossing in the middle of the town centre be moved to the controlled intersection?, if not do not waste time changing anything.

seen the light have they?

Nonsense

It's not the roundabout that is the issue. No need for lights. The issues are: Drivers who stop and wait needlessly. Pedestrians not using the multiple pedestrian crossings. Only one lane. Nowhere to park. Lights will not solve traffic build up one bit. This Council seems to think lights are a magic trick. Cameron Road needs to be two lanes all through to Barkes Corner. And don't put lights on Barkes Corner. No need. More traffic = more lanes. At some point people need to wake up to that inescapable fact. Take the lights and put them in the sand next to your heads.

A partial fix

Traffic lights work fine in heavy traffic where everyone gets a go. In light traffic they hinder flow. Sitting at a red light with nothing happening is frustrating. Why, oh, why don't we adopt what the rest of the world has, ie orange flashing lights, meaning light traffic flow - use the right hand rule, I don't know!

Use this road every day morning, noon and night and have yet to experience any of the problems associated with it.People cross the roads all over the place so lights will not make any difference, if it is so dangerous a police station is just up the road, station a few officers there at peak times and see what happens.

Greertons biggest faults......

Posted on 29-10-2015 10:35 | By How about this view!

Angle parking, motorists desperate to get into and out of the bays, a post office situated too close to the roundabout and the inadequate bus-stops that have insufficient room for the buses and are situated next to a pedestrian crossing (Amazing that more pedestrians are not knocked down by impatient drivers overtaking a bus on a pedestrian crossing). Add up to five buses arriving into this pathetic mess at the same time and there is always going to be chaos. Traffic lights will only add to the misery and to be quite honest, I fail to see what the attraction to Greerton is? Maybe it is just the fact that there is free parking?

Yes Please

The traffic in Greerton at 5pm is hidi! The traffic is banked up from Barkes corner to Chadwick Road and beyond. Yes traffic lights are a must, the Chadwick Cameron roads roundabout is a nasty intersection at the best of times, as is Barkes Corner. Bring it!

Whatever TCC and NZTA do with roading it is always the wrong choice it is always obscenely expensive and it is always too late. You can count on this lot being a stuff up too because it is the one certainty in life here.

There is another certainty kellbell,

you will oppose everything.Bring on the lights, can't be any worse than the current situation, and will probably be the improvement we are looking for. Robin Bell.
