Quarter-final role for Bay ref

Bay of Plenty rugby official Glen Jackson has been named as an assistant referee for the Australia versus Scotland World Cup quarter-final clash at Twickenham on Monday.

It's the first Rugby World Cup tournament for the former Steamers first-five, and Jackson has been named alongside France's Pascal Gauzere to assist South African referee Craig Joubert.

The television match official (TMO) will be New Zealand's Ben Skeen.

Welshman Nigel Owens will referee the All Blacks' World Cup quarter-final match against France in Cardiff on Sunday morning (NZT).

The appointment of Owens has put an end to speculation as to whether Wayne Barnes, who controlled the last-eight showdown between the All Blacks and France in Cardiff in 2007, would return to take charge of the fixture at the Millennium Stadium.

Barnes proved to be a controversial figure in that match, which was won 20-18 by France.

The defeat almost cost coach Graham Henry his job, and when he fronted the New Zealand Rugby board to argue why he should keep his position, he made specific reference to some of the mistakes made by Barnes in that sudden-death fixture.

Henry kept his job, and invited his assistants Wayne Smith and Steve Hansen to continue. They guided the All Blacks to an 8-7 victory over France in the World Cup final in Auckland in 2011.

Nigel Owens, Jerome Garces and Craig Joubert have been appointed to the other two quarter-finals in Cardiff and London this weekend.

England's Barnes will take charge of the first match on Sunday morning, between South Africa and Wales at Twickenham. He will be joined by assistant referees George Clancy (Ireland) and JP Doyle (England) with the television match official being Graham Hughes, also of England.

Owens will be assisted by Jaco Peyper of South Africa and John Lacey of Ireland. The TMO will be South Africa's Shaun Veldsman.

The third quarter-final between Ireland and Argentina on Monday morning will be refereed by Garces of France with his countryman, Romain Poite, and New Zealand's Chris Pollock as assistant referees. George Ayoub (Australia) will be the TMO.

World Rugby's Match Official Selection Committee consists of John Jeffrey (Chairman), Lyndon Bray (Sanzar), Andrew Cole (Sanzar), Donal Courtney (EPCR), Clayton Thomas (Six Nations) and World Rugby High Performance Match Official Manager Joel Jutge.
