Body recovered from hot pool

The body of a man has been recovered from a hot pool in Kuirau Park as police continue their investigation.

The man's body was discovered by a tourist in Rotorua who alerted police yesterday afternoon.

A body was found in the hot pools at Kuirau Park yesterday afternoon.

Police are treating the death as unexplained at this stage and are working to established who the person is, as well as track their last movements.

'Police are liaising with the Coroner. The park scene has been blessed and the park has now re-opened,” says a statement from police.

A post mortem will be carried out in Auckland today, and police believe the person to be a local man.

However, it is not anticipated that police will be able to confirm the man's identity until Thursday at the earliest.

Enquiries are continuing and no further police comment is expected until identity can be confirmed.

The body was discovered sometime after 2pm and witnesses described seeing police preparing a stretcher outside a fenced hot pool area.

A member of the public told SunLive there were a number of police around one of the fenced off pools in the park across from Rotorua Hospital on Ranolf Street.

People with information that may help police in identifying the person or saw something out of the ordinary around the park yesterday afternoon are asked to contact their local police station.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
