The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was called to Te Kaha last night to airlift an 80-year-old man to Whakatane Hospital.
The man, who has a medical condition, was stabilised by St John paramedics and local doctor following the 5.30pm call-out, before being flown to hospital for further treatment.

The helicopter was called due to the distance to hospital and the condition of the road, which is down to one lane due to a large slip.
Philips Search and Rescue Trust is a charitable organisation, operating rescue helicopters throughout the Central North Island.
