MPI reviewing fisheries system

The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for public feedback on a review to help future-proof New Zealand's fisheries management system.

Director of sector policy Jarred Mair says the review will provide an opportunity to think more broadly about the ministry's key processes, regulatory and legislative settings.

'Looking after New Zealand's fisheries is everybody's responsibility,” believes Jarred.

'Your contribution to this review will help us complete the picture of what's working and what's not, so we can see where we can make positive change.

'It's important to know that we're coming from an already strong position. Our fisheries management system is considered world-leading and scientific assessments show that overall our fisheries are sustainable.

'There will be a number of opportunities for people to have their say throughout this process.”

The first phase of the review, which is now underway, will focus on gathering information from stakeholders and the public about what is working and what might be priorities for change.

The ministry will then summarise what it's heard and bring that back for feedback in early 2016.

If it is decided that change is needed, the MPI will develop proposals and there will be another opportunity for the public have their say.

Jarred says the fundamentals of the system are sound and, overall, New Zealand's fish stocks are in good shape, so the ministry won't look to make changes to core elements of the quota management system.

'Similarly, the existing rights and interests of recreational, customary and commercial fishers, as well as Treaty settlements, are not in scope,” adds Jarred.

'We look forward to hearing what you have to say so we can ensure the system continues to deliver for current and future generations.”
