Toll fee drives Tom away

A former Route K user has vowed to avoid the toll road in future after receiving a bill of $6.70 for a single trip.

Now, Tauranga's Tom Clarke is questioning how the New Zealand Transport Agency can justify such a fee.

After a bill of $6.70 for a single trip, Tom Clarke has gone off the idea of using Route K. Photo: Bruce Barnard.

'I used to use that toll road between The Lakes and Tauranga frequently,” says Tom. 'Most people have a few spare coins in their car. You pay the people, say hello, and you carry on.

'Now it's been automated, I haven't been going through there, but my wife did and soon after I got a bill in the mail for $6.70. That was one trip.

'I didn't know there was going to be an additional fee. I understood it to be $1.80, so there's going to be a lot of people caught out. I bet they will be spewing about it too.

'I think $6.70 for one trip is just ridiculous. I guess we will have to get smarter and set up an account. It's just another bill to pay isn't it?”

The New Zealand Transport Agency says the fee is to cover the costs involved in finding the owner of the vehicle. The video needs to be visually checked, the owner located and the bill printed and posted.

To help customers get used to the new tolling system, the NZTA have increased the normal timeframe for payment from five to 19 business days after a trip is recorded.

If no payment is received within 19 days, customers are sent a reminder called a Toll Payment Notice, which incurs an additional $4.90 administration charge.

If the Toll Payment Notice remains unpaid after 28 days, an Infringement Notice may be issued and the outstanding debt may be sent to a debt collection agency.

Historically, with the Northern Gateway Toll Road near Auckland, the agency has experienced a 97 per cent compliance on payment of trips made.

Takitimu Drive toll road is experiencing an average of 6000 vehicles per day. In 2014, the average vehicles per day was 5400, representing an 11 per cent increase.

NZTA BOP highways manager Niclas Johansson believes the higher vehicle numbers on Takitimu Drive is because people no longer have to search for loose change to travel through.

The electronic tolling means people can have one toll account that covers all three of the Transport Agency's toll roads – the Tauranga Eastern Link, Northern Gateway and the former Route K, now Takitimu Drive Toll Road.

On the TEL, the average traffic number is 6400 vehicles per day, compared to the predicted 6000. Most (86 per cent) are cars motorbikes and light trucks, with 14 per cent heavy vehicles.

'The TEL is one of the best roads in NZ,” says Niclas. 'It's extremely safe and it shaves off a lot of time, so it is no surprise that people are choosing to use it.

'We are excited by the high number of vehicles per day and we expect the number of travellers using the TEL to continue growing – especially with the predicted population boom that is expected in Papamoa.

'One Auckland man called our Tauranga office last month to tell us that he didn't mind paying the toll because the road was 'simply gorgeous” and 'surely the eighth wonder of the world”.

'He called just to pass on his congratulations to the TEL team and told us he hasn't enjoyed driving on a road as much in a long time.”

The $1.20 transaction fee charged for over the counter sales at BP or Caltex service stations is on the transaction not the toll, says Niclas.

Customers can pre-purchase up to 10 tolls in one transaction, incurring only one $1.20 fee (12 cents per toll). Alternatively, tolls can be paid online at: www.tollroad.govt.nz to avoid the transaction fee altogether.

I eel sorry for Tom, because he did not read or listen to all the promotion re the Toll road. As he travelled the road he would have seen the notices about paying. Literature prior to the toll road changing was every where. Tom you will realise over a period of time it cost him by going around far more than the money he was charged. Enrolled prior to the change over and full of praise for method, quicker and easier than handing money over, more like the throw the money bin at the old bridgeplaza.

Sorry Tom

NZTA don,t really give a stuff about you or others in the same boat. The only reason they extended the 5 day grace period to 19days was the fact that their web site had crashed resulting that no-one could open accounts. Secondly if they want to compare velicle numbers at least give a true comparsion.Like last year the toll was increased by TCC from $1.50 to $2 in July &$4 to $5 for heavy vehicles thus a drop in numbers occured plus motorbikes weren,t charged until AUG 2015and the numbers going through in the last months before NZTA took over were upto 6000 per day so It would seem not much of an actual increase. How long will the tolls remain now previously under TCC they anticipated 2026 Nzta have said nothing.

Do the sums.......

Yes but when you go online to pay a single toll or set up an account with no fees, if your bank doesnt have POLI the payment system that NZTA use you are back to square 1.I contacted them and was told because i also do not have a credit card then maybe i should take the free route, what a joke.

Really ?

The removal of the tollbooths and subsequent automated cameras and fees has been really well advertised and reported on, so really hard to believe this guy didn't know there were extra fees If tolls weren't paid on time. Pay up, quit your whinging and start using a pre paid account...simple as.

Cash charge

It would be fine if it was $1.80, but this is not to be unless one sets up an account! It easier not to use the toll roads and cheaper when it comes down to the occasional user!

Pay the toll on time and it's only $1.80

If he had paid on time it would of been only $1.80 like everyone else. I think it's a bit unfair he's having a moan when it is advertised you have 5 days to pay.

Pay Up

Quit complaining out of your own laziness. If you go on a toll road either plan it and pay up front or go online and pay. Don't wait for them to have to run around finding you. Maybe you were just hoping the bill wouldn't arrive? More fool you. Pay up.

If you are that irresponsible about your money it is your own fault. It is very easy to find out the way the toll system works.

Confusion or reality?

All the explanatory info via the media and the flyers and the NZTA website, tends to be confusing. This applies especially to the info on the 'hidden' costs for various transactions. I pre-paid for tolls (meaning NZTA has my money) but according to the NZTA rep. in the news report, there is a $1.20 'transaction fee!' To me that appears to be a double whammy in favour of NZTA. Maybe I am missing something...

No Surprise

Any road outside of Auckland is great.

Yes, you are missing something. The $1.20 fee is only if you purchase at gas stations. Online there is no transaction fee. As per final sentence "Alternatively, tolls can be paid online at: www.tollroad.govt.nz to avoid the transaction fee altogether."

Not Cool

That really isn't nice, some times circumstances prevent quick payment. Ie going away camping. I have a toll account and have found it very not user friendly to set up or maintain. You cant enter a user name instead you are a number.

stop whinging!

I can also be technologically challenged at times, but after seeing the sign advertising how to pay for the toll online, I went online and paid. Seriously Tom - I'm in my 50's and managed to do it, surely a young man like you can work out to do it!! I also work full time, look after foster kids, and run a household, and still managed to find time.

You would know you are going camping so you could pre pay it or you could exercise your democratic right and not use it at all. Simple really.

This overcharging is part of deliberate policy via Banks which are clipping each payment as loan providers to gouge as much profit as idiot public will bear, without getting up in arms to burning toll mechanism down. We see this deliberate gouging via telephone and electric company's who make a fortune out of NZ Governments deliberately kept very low benefits via orders of OZ Bankers which ensure power & telephone accounts cannot be paid by beneficiaries pensioners etc in one payment to avoid having to pay the interest charges and extra late processing fee's as is case here. These government endorsed encouraged ripoffs which effectively transfers this countries wealth to now foreign owned corporates. This is how this country has been slowly but surely fleeced of is public assets, all courtesy of Aussie Bankers who control our financial industry and also underhandedly dictate government policy and policing thereof. How do you explain Nz owned banks like TSB and SBS bank then??

OK He got stung, but

if you discover this is happening to you, do go on line and set up a Toll account with NZTA. It is well worth it. My wife uses this road more than I do but at a simple $1.80 per one-way trip it is much more affordable. I guess it is a case of understanding the system which if you set it up for everyone in your family, is of significant benefit. No stopping, no going to a service station to pay your bill, no delays and it's cheaper than the regular $2.00 fee. An auto-payment will debit your Bank account and top-up the Toll account. So far I have yet to receive a charge for topping-up.

Your responsibility

NZTA have put significant information out to people to inform them of the changes to the toll road. They have taken into consideration different peoples circumstances eg people who don't have access to internet, or buy the paper and provided them with alternative ways to be informed of the changes to route K. Tom needs to understand that there are rules to using the road, and one of them is to pay within the 5 days which applys to all toll roads in new Zealand. However, when the new toll road opened in Tauranga and they assumed control of route k, they understood that this was going to be a new system for the people who live in the area and extended the payment days to 19. At the end of the day, if you don't want to pay there is a free route provided.
