'Initial police enquiries indicate that a Toyota utility containing a man and his 8-year-old son had broken down,” says a statement from police.

'The father crossed the road to get some water for his vehicle's radiator leaving his son in the vehicle.

'It appears that the boy decided a short time later to follow his father across the road with tragic consequences.”

The driver of the Toyota Corolla vehicle that collided with the young boy was not injured.
