Weather points to fine weekend

Fine, breezy, a shower or two on Thursday and a fine Saturday – this is what the Metservice is predicting for the Bay of Plenty this week.

Monday's south-westerlies are set to continue into Tuesday, but at a slightly slower speed, down to from around 20 knots to 15.

'There might be some afternoon cloud in the central Bay of Plenty and over towards the ranges in the east,” says Metservice meteorologist Lisa Murray.

'Tomorrow is looking like another fine day as well, with winds a tiny bit lighter. In the morning, expect 10 -15 knots in that inshore area, but that eases off during the day and gets even lighter.”

The wind is predicted to swing around to the west on Wednesday, while Thursday is again mainly fine but with a brief burst of showers around the middle of the day as westerlies change to a southerlies as the front comes through.

'It's not a big rain band or anything,” says Lisa, 'just a brief period of a few showers around the middle of the day. Beforehand it will be mainly fine, and then it will clear off again.

'Friday will bring fine, light winds and the it'll be the same on Saturday.”

Further north, around the Coromandel, the weather is mainly fine through to Wednesday.

'On Thursday, there's a brief period of showers is in the morning because of the angle of that front,” says Lisa.

'But there are increasing fine spells after that. Once those showers go through it's going to be a decent enough day and brilliant for the school holidays.”

Temperatures are expected to reach 20 degrees on Tuesday and 21 on Wednesday before dropping to around 18 on Friday. Overnight, lows will hit about eight degrees with the exception of Thursday, where it warms up to around 11.

Meanwhile the southern region of the North Island and the South Island are experiencing severe gales, with strong or gale west or north-westerlies set to affect southern and central parts for much of the week.

Rain is forecast for the West Coast, but dry eastern areas could see some scorching temperatures this week, with daytime highs around the mid-20s being a common occurrence. Napier could hit 29 degrees on Thursday.
