Kowhai cut sparks questions

A Kowhai tree cut down on the edge of Coronation Park's pond in Mount Maunganui's was 'in very poor condition” and 'full of borer” say city arborists.

Questions were fired at the authorities on Friday by a concerned Mount resident who noticed the tree being felled.

However, Tauranga City Council communications advisor Viktoria Ermes says replacement trees will be planted in its place.

One other small tree, which had died, was also removed yesterday.

'The site will have new plants installed all around the pond as part of the current project that is in progress,” says Viktoria.

'The tree removal is part of this project at Coronation Park.”

She also reassured concerned residents that Tui being denied the flowering Kowhai stall have the nearby banksia as a food source.

I wonder if this is Yet another non emergency job that should have gone out to tender Rather than to encumbered council contractor........
