Jack Dixon: One year on

The lives of the family of Jack Dixon have stood still since the five-year-old was swept out to sea exactly one year ago today.

Jack was lost on Shelley Beach at Mount Maunganui during a king tide, and despite extensive air, sea and land efforts, the youngster was never seen again.

A year later, his family continue to mourn the loss of their little boy on October 1, 2014.

'Our lives have stood still since Jack was suddenly taken away from us,” say the family.

'The pain of losing him is no less, nor will it ever be, and we continue to wake each day with heavy hearts.

'Jack was loved by all of those who knew him.

'We are also aware that through this tragedy, Jack touched many more people's hearts.

The family will hold a minute's silence today to mark the one-year anniversary of that fateful day, and they are encouraging those touched by the tragedy to join them.

'We will be holding a private minute's silence for Jack at 11.20am on October 1, 2015,” they explain, 'to remember the happy, full of life boy we were blessed to have for five beautiful years.

'No matter where people are that day, please feel welcome to send your thoughts to Jack at this time.”

During last year's extensive search, the community rallied behind the family, lighting candles on Mount Maunganui's Main Beach in a show of support.

  • Anyone wishing to pay their respects are invited to light a candle once more for Jack on the Mount's Main Beach at 7.20pm on Thursday evening.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all, every time I walk the track I think of you and hope that one day something may turn up to give you some peace.

I never knew Jack or his family, but I think of them whenever we go to the Mount. Like Kia kaha, I hope that one day something will turn up that will help with resolution, if resolution is even possible at times like this.

Like Croaky we always think of little Jack whenever we walk the base track.
