Illegal street racing

For the second time in as many weeks Wellington Police have arrested a group of drivers for ‘Illegal Street Racing' offences on streets of Wellington.

Last Sunday evening, police were alerted to the actions of a group of five cars allegedly driving at high speed around the coastal roads of the Mirimar Peninsula, Wellington.

Police located the vehicles and five males of Wellington, aged between 17 and 21 years, will next appear in the Wellington District Court on 23rd October 2015 facing a number of driving related charges.

Constable Laurence Vautier of the Wellington District Road Policing Group, who a fortnight ago stopped two vehicles on State Highway 2 for driving at more than 200km/h says, 'Once again a group of drivers have risked their lives, and those of the public, in the pursuit of high speed driving.

"Police impounded all five vehicles for 28 days and the matter is now before the Courts, where the drivers can explain their action to a Judge."

A number of people may have seen the vehicles in Shelly Bay, Point Howard and Scorching Bay on Sunday evening and Police are asking anyone with information to contact Constable Laurence Vautier, Wellington Police on (04) 381-2000.

One vehicle was described as a blue coloured sedan with white bumpers.

Another was described as a red coloured coupe.

Police again remind drivers of the risks of speeding and encourage members of the public that witness this type of behaviour to contact Police on 111.
