Maori rugby heating up

While the local club rugby scene has wound down, the battle isn't over for local Maori rugby players.

With over 26 years of history, the Tauranga Moana Taonga Games provide an opportunity for players to return to their respected marae and hapu to commemorate taonga and strengthen family ties.

Today sees Matapihi and Ngati Hangarau play for the Rangitukunoa Memorial Trophy. Show your whanau support and get along to one of these games.

Here's a look at what's on this weekend:

Luke Murray Trophy:

Matakana v Te Rereatukahia at Katikati Rugby Club, 12pm kick off

Challenge for the King Cup

Te Puna v Raungaiti-Waharoa at Matamata, 12pm kick off

Rangitukunoa Memorial Trophy Matapihi v Ngati Hangarau at Matapihi, 1pm kick off

Today's action also sees Murupara and Waiohau play for the Fatty Nuku trophy.

These teams have played for this trophy for many years and the trophy is in remembrance of Fatty, a former rugby player who tragically passed away.

This is the 2nd of four games and kick off is 2.30pm at Murupara.
